Respecting Muslim patients' needs
The New York Times Share
A woman in her mid-30s wearing a hijab, the traditional Muslim head covering, comes to an urgent care center complaining of leg pain. The first thing she asks: "Are there any woman doctors around?" She declines to be alone in an exam room with a male doctor. She does not want to be touched by a man who is not a family member, even as part of a medical examination. It's a hypothetical situation, recounted in a new paper in The
Journal of Medical Ethics, but the scenario neatly summarizes some of the dilemmas confronting health care workers in hospitals serving observant Muslim patients. When the traditional health care system cannot accommodate their needs, what are doctors and nurses to do? More
Affirmative action may be back on the table
The Salt Lake Tribune
Share

Backers of a bid to end affirmative action said that race-based preferences in college admissions and hiring are creating racial resentment and animosity and hampering efforts to build a color-blind
society. "We've plateaued in our efforts. Further progress to end or slow discrimination has virtually ended," said Utah State Rep. Curt Oda, R-Clearfield. "We are no longer making any difference with the programs enacted in the last 46 years."

5 ways to bridge the generation gap at work
The Economic Times
Share

Age no longer ensures seniority in the workplace. Performance is what it's all about. Fresh ideas, out-of-the-box thinking, energy, ability to adapt and learn on the job are becoming increasingly important. Many older, seasoned executives, especially in the private sector, are suddenly finding themselves overtaken by GenNext. This shift of power often ends up creating a
not-so-congenial atmosphere at the workplace.

Supreme Court discusses gender discrimination in immigration case
The Sacramento Bee
Share

Laws that discriminate between men and women have been regularly declared unconstitutional since the 1970s, but the Supreme Court seemed ready to permit an exception to that rule. At issue was when children born of mixed marriages abroad can claim U.S. citizenship.

Religious freedom has a place in the workplace
PR-USA.net

The past 10 years have been difficult for actively religious workers across America. The rate of religious discrimination claims has grown at around four times the rate as other claims.

The generation gap is getting smaller for workers at Methodist Health System in Dallas, thanks to its Managing Generational Diversity classes. Health system staffers from four generations are learning the values, motivators, behaviors and expectations of each generation in the work force — traditionalists, baby boomers, Generation Xers and Millennials (including Generation Yers) in an effort to improve workplace
communication.

With no laws against it,
workplace harassment takes a toll
Detroit Free Press

Bullying is a growing concern across the country, yet workplace bullying is a life-altering threat that rarely
gathers the attention that schoolyard bullying does. Still, workplace bullying can prompt feelings of stress, depression and anxiety, and some say it can cause heart attacks and even lead to suicide.

Congress has little time left on its legislative calendar, and it appears unlikely that it will tackle the Employment Non-Discrimination Act this year. ENDA would prohibit employment discrimination
based on sexual orientation or gender identity. This law has long been a primary goal for LGBT activists, given the widespread and persistent discrimination that people face based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Report debunks Millennial generation workforce myth
Wireless Week
Share

So you think Millennials are the ones driving technology and social media adoption in the workplace? Not so fast, say the authors of the latest iPass Mobile Workforce Report. Defined in the report as a person age 34 or younger, Millennials are not pushing the envelope as much as many pundits would have you believe. "In reality, older generations are just as disruptive to
the status quo in the workforce today," the report states.
