From the Desk of the ASHHRA Executive Director & IFD President

Dear ##FirstName##,

In the spirit of the holiday season, we want to take this time to thank you for your generous support of ASHHRA and the Institute. Many of you volunteer in an effort to “give back” to your profession. We truly recognize how difficult this is given the responsibilities you have in your careers and in facing the current economic climate. Because of your talent and willingness to give back, we want to thank you and have you know that it is our privilege to provide you with the best resources available to support your everyday needs. In that regard, we hope this weekly newsletter, from various media sources, is a way for you to gather useful information that assists with your knowledge and understanding of diversity needs in the workplace.

Again, thank you for your membership in ASHHRA and IFD, and we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Cathy Sewell
Executive Director, ASHHRA

IFD President, Institute for Diversity

Confronting the Racial Barriers Between Doctors and Patients
from The New York Times
Most of the research over the last 30 years has focused on the racial inequalities that affect patients; and the findings have been dismal. In 2002, the Institute of Medicine published a report that cited multiple examples of disparities across a wide range of health care and disease settings. African-Americans are more likely to undergo less desirable procedures like amputation of all or part of a limb, while minorities with some forms of lung cancer had higher mortality rates because they were less likely to have surgery. from The Associated Press via The Chicago Tribune
A health administrator in Racine, Wis., claims she's been the victim of illegal age discrimination and she wants something done about it. The administrator alleges that she's been subjected to certain personnel actions based on illegal age discrimination and her prior Equal Employment Opportunity activity and opposition to age and disability discrimination. How will Barack Obama's Election Influence Hiring Across the U.S.?
from The Chicago Tribune
Even as proponents of workplace diversity cheered Barack Obama's presidential election, they sounded a note of caution on how to interpret the victory and use it to their advantage. They want to give his victory its due without portraying the accomplishment as an anomaly. Moreover, they feel they still need to call attention to the complex institutional and societal barriers that have kept minorities from moving into executive suites and boardrooms in greater numbers. Bullying Has Moved from the Schoolyard to the Workplace
from the Indianapolis Star
An estimated 21 to 28 million workers leave their jobs because of bullying in the workplace, according to the Workplace Bullying Institute in Washington state. When employers are made aware of bullying, 62 percent make the problem worse or ignore the complaints. About 72 percent of bullies are bosses. More

Daschle to Be Nominee for Health Post in Obama Cabinet
from The New York Times
President-elect Barack Obama will nominate former Senator Thomas A. Daschle of South Dakota as secretary of health and human services, and is leaning toward former Deputy Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. as attorney general. More

Health of California's Seniors is Deteriorating
from The Los Angeles Times
Three out of five seniors in California had high blood pressure in 2005, up from half in 2001, according to a recent UCLA study. The report also found that significant racial gaps remained. Diabetes and obesity are nearly twice as high for older African Americans and Latinos than whites. In addition, Asian American, black and Latino seniors were three times as likely to report difficulty getting enough to eat. More
