Hello ASHHRA and IFD Members:

Know anyone without insurance because of their health? Have you heard of the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) created by the Affordable Care Act?

The ASHHRA website has resources from the U.S. Department of Health and Humans Services (HHS) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) to make sure that hospitals and staff are aware of PCIP, and have information about PCIP should patients be interested.

Requiring a diploma may be discriminatory

The gap between the least healthy and most healthy people has increased substantially among young American adults, new research suggests. Among those born early in the 20th century and on through the "baby boom" years (1946-1964), health disparities among generations continuously declined in the United States. But the health gap increased for post-baby boomers, especially those born after 1980, according to a report in the December issue of the journal American Sociological Review. More

The commitment to diversity must be more than superficial, the researchers say. "There are organizations that are doing what research and popular practice tells them to do. They are showing pictures of diverse workers on their website and say they have a commitment to diversity, but they’re not really going beyond what people may see as simply window dressing," said Kristyn Scott, lead author of the study, The Diverse Organization: Finding Gold at the End of the Rainbow, and a professor with Ryerson University's Ted Rogers School of Management. Hispanic women may be more likely to die of breast cancer than white women

Hispanic women may be at higher risk of dying from breast cancer compared with white women, a study finds. The study was presented at the Cancer Therapy & Research Center-American Association for Cancer Research San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. Researchers looked at survival rates among 577 Hispanic and white women with invasive breast cancer who were part of the New Mexico Women's Health Study. They discovered that Hispanic women had about a 20 percent higher risk of dying from breast cancer compared with white women. More

The study, published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, found the employees got almost an hour more of sleep before work days, were less likely to feel obligated to work when sick and were more likely to go to a doctor when necessary, even when busy.
