3D virtual tour educates consumers about indoor air quality

In an effort to help people understand indoor air pollution and the simple ways they can combat it in their homes, the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) has launched an interactive animated house tour online, which allows users to take a virtual "walk through" of a family residence while learning about common sources of indoor air pollution. The computer-generated, two-story home features a fully-equipped kitchen, living room, den, bathroom, master bedroom, and nursery, as well as an basement that's undergoing renovation&#8212each furnished with common household products and materials that are known to emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Once a user "enters" a room, he or she can scroll over the various products to learn more about their chemical emissions, as well as other sources of indoor air pollution, and discover straightforward solutions.

The human brain is a simple piece of complex technology. It works on expectation, not perception. It is easy to trick the brain if you have the right conditions and the wrong circumstances. Consider this real-life example of what happens when the brain expects one thing even though reality does not support the expectation.

Housing has turned the corner but is still struggling

Housing has turned the corner of the worst downturn in more than 60 years, but the market is still grappling with high unemployment and sharply lower home prices, according to "The State of the Nation's Housing 2010," which was released by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University on June 14.
Updated tale features the three little "starchitects"

Author Steven Guarnaccia has updated the classic tale, "The Three Little Pigs," to model the familiar piggy homebuilders on Frank Gehry, Philip Johnson and Frank Lloyd Wright. Although the book is intended for children ages 4 and up, Guarnaccia plays to design fans, decorating the pigs' homes with objects by the likes of Noguchi and Starck. Children will need a design history lesson to appreciate this retelling.
