What's Coming Up in 2014?
By Alexandra Cantor Owens
As the professional association of independent nonfiction writers, ASJA has to stay current with the times. And exciting times they are! More and more writers are becoming entrepreneurs as existing media structures fall away and morph into something else. And as health insurance becomes less of an anchor on employees, more will be ready to make the leap.

Among writers' organizations, ASJA's membership qualifications have long been the most selective. They are that way for a reason — professionals need to have a place they can call their own. As selective as they are they do change with realities of the writing industry. Our members' clients include all kinds of enterprises in addition to the traditional media outlets and publishers, and they are expanding into arenas far beyond traditional articles and trade books.

6 Insider Tips for Finding and Applying to Writers' Colonies
Writer's Digest
Writers' colonies are little-known treasures: they exist all over the United States and abroad, but many writers have never heard of them. That's partly because many of the writers who attend these residencies aren't big Internet users. They spend their time writing — not browsing the Internet — which means they're not sharing their experiences online.

Print Starts to Settle Into Its Niches
The New York Times
Kevin Kelly is not a dumb guy — far from it actually. As the founding executive editor of Wired and one of the people who helped build The Well, among the earliest online communities, he has done a good job of seeing what is coming next for decades. But last year, he had what sounded to me like a dumb idea.
