Giving the purity test to nonprofit news

"Nonprofit news" has a special ring to it, an Ivory Soap patina of "99 and 44/100 percent Pure." Consider the not-for-profit news outfits that have popped up across the U.S. over the past several years. They're not beholden to Wall Street since they aren't traded on the stock exchange. They might not be crippled by angry advertisers, because they run few, if any, ads. Many of them don't charge for their content, so they don't need to worry as much about circulation numbers. Instead — at least in theory — they put principle over principal and focus on top-notch journalism. You know, the kind produced by elder statesman nonprofits like The Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio and the Tampa Bay (formerly St. Petersburg) Times.

Stanford Literary Lab applies 'big data' to reading
Publishing Perspectives
What with all the recent headlines about the NSA and big data and meta data, it's nice to know that there are nongovernmental organizations that can make use of such things as well. One such use, suggested by Franco Moretti, professor of English at Stanford University and co-founder of the Stanford Literary Lab, is for those with too many books on their hands and not enough time to read them: "Feed the books into a computer program and make graphs, maps and charts: it's the best way to get to grips with the vastness of literature."

In what's otherwise been a fairly quiet year for personnel changes at Condé Nast, Condé Nast Traveler vp, publisher Carolyn Kremins has been named svp and gm of food-centric digital network Epicurious. Kremins, who will be in charge of growing the Epicurious brand, develop strategic partnerships and expanding revenue-generating programs, according to a statement, is said to be regarded at Condé Nast as one of its rising stars.

Why e-book best-seller prices spiked

With all the focus on the ongoing Apple-DOJ trial, it may have gotten lost that the average price of a best-selling e-book spiked to almost $9. That's higher than at any point in 2013 and a rise of about $2 from last week – easily the biggest increase we've seen since we started observing e-book prices in August of 2012.
