ATA partners with AUSA, providing attendees access to 2 expo halls in San Antonio

The American Telemedicine Association is pleased to announce a partnership with The Association of the U.S. Army that will provide ATA 2010 attendees (May 16 to 18, San Antonio) a complimentary pass to the AUSA expo hall, located adjacent to the ATA 2010 exhibit hall. Attendees now will have access to twice as many medical product and service exhibitors from 1 to 3 p.m. May 18; in turn AUSA attendees will be joining ATA for the opening exhibit hall reception May 16. More



FDA considers regulating safety of electronic health systems

Concerned about potential safety risks in health information technology, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration may be moving closer to regulating the systems for the first time. In the past two years, the agency has received reports of six patient deaths and several dozen injuries linked to malfunctions in the systems, Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in testimony prepared for a government hearing on Feb. 25. Virginia legislature passes bill requiring reimbursement for telemedicine

By a unanimous vote, the Virginia state legislature March 2 approved SB 675 mandating that health insurers pay for telemedicine services. Gov. McDonnell is expected to sign the bill into law. Virginia is the latest in a string of states passing similar legislation. Eleven other states have adopted mandates for the coverage of telemedicine: California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas. More

Mayo Clinic, GE Healthcare and Intel have launched a new initiative to study the care and cost benefits of home-based health monitoring for elderly patients with chronic illnesses. During the year-long study, 200 high-risk patients age 60 and older who suffer chronic conditions such as heart failure, diabetes, and lung disease will use at-home medical devices daily to take their vital signs, such as blood pressure, peak air flow, weight, or blood sugar readings. The University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry launched a four-year pilot project, which will help treat patients in need of critical dental care and services. California to build HIE with nearly $40 million

Of the more than $100 million that California will receive from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for health care, the California Health and Human Services Agency will use $38.8 million to build a statewide health information exchange. The grant for HIE comes out to be approximately $1 per resident for the populous state, an amount many local industry leaders felt is insufficient to get the job done. More

Together with its new business partner Panasonic, Lufthansa aims to equip a major part of its long-range fleet with FlyNet within the first year of operation. Should doctors nationwide use e-prescribing to decrease prescription errors? A study led by physician-scientists from Weill Cornell Medical College found that health care providers using an electronic system to write prescriptions were seven times less likely to make errors than those writing their prescriptions by hand. The study appeared in the Feb. 26 online edition of the Journal of General Internal Medicine. More
