Policymakers push for telehealth reimbursements
Government Health IT    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mobile health devices and applications hold great promise for improving the cost and quality of care, but an outmoded system of reimbursement for physicians considering the technologies thwarts their adoption, both public and private health IT experts said. Consumers already use mobile applications for tracking their personal health, but it will take major changes in health care's financial system for physicians to include e-mail, texts and devices into patient care, according to a panel discussion May 5 sponsored by the Institute for e-Health Policy. Biden: Health IT savings will be bigger than projected
InformationWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When electronic health records are fully implemented in 2014, along with health information exchanges and other technologies associated with health care delivery, the cost of health care will be significantly less than the Congressional Budget Office has calculated, Vice President Joe Biden said. "We believe there's a lot more savings in the health care bill that we passed. The CBO, they only count what they can feel and taste. They only count what's done before, and so we think there's a lot of additional savings to be had," Biden said. More

States want to share patient Rx use to curb abuse
The Associated Press via The Miami Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On his night shift in a busy emergency room, Dr. Jacob Khushigian inevitably finds a few patients more likely to be hunting for drugs than medical attention. The guy who claims he has severe abdominal pain doesn't grimace when sitting up. A woman who recently moved to the area fails to disclose she sees a doctor elsewhere. An ambulance patient complaining of a sore leg and back doesn't reveal she was turned away by another hospital. More

Using a bar code on patient wristbands cut drug errors by more than half, researchers at one U.S. hospital reported on May 5. Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found a bar-code system that matched patients with their medicines reduced the chance of getting the wrong drug by 57 percent. "Having this technology is a good thing," Dr. Eric Poon of Brigham and Women's said in a telephone interview. "Patients receive a lot of medications when hospitalized. It's good to have the additional safety net." More

Cochlear clinic: NBN to spur telemedicine
iTWire    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The National Broadband Network will feature much richer telemedicine capabilities, allowing applications to be rolled out to "deliver good quality care to people who could not get it without traveling to the city," according to the head of IT at a Cochlear implant clinic. Steve Pascoe, IT manager of the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre, said that suggestions the higher bandwidth promised to the majority of Australia by the NBN was not yet needed were "short sighted" and that business and health could be the big winners from the new network. Recently in mobile health news comes a punchy one-liner from an industry thought leader: M-health, think of it as "personal health reform." Manhattan Research also disclosed a new industry metric that's sure to be kicked around for the next year: 72 percent of U.S. physicians currently use smartphones. That's up from 64 percent last year and 50 percent three years ago. Manhattan said the adoption rate still is set to hit 81 percent come 2012. More
