Iowa clinics use telehealth system to counsel, dispense abortion pills
The Des Moines Register
Share

Small Planned Parenthood clinics around Iowa are using a remote-control, pill-dispensing system to make abortions available in areas where few doctors offer them. The first-in-the-nation system allows a Planned Parenthood physician from Des Moines to visit with each patient by videoconference and then press a computer button to open a drawer in front of the
patient, who could be seated up to 190 miles away. The patient then reaches into the drawer and withdraws the abortion pills.

Fifty percent of U.S. parents say they welcome e-communications with their child's doctor, a U.S. survey indicates. However, researchers at the University of Michigan Health System report many
physicians are reluctant to use e-communications. Dr. Matthew Davis, director of the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, says less than 15 percent of parents report they currently are able to use e-mail or the Internet to schedule appointments, receive immunization or lab records, complete screening forms, or request prescription refills.

The problem for telehealth is getting paid
ZDNet

While the health reform battle was billed as one about who pays for care, the real issue underlying it was always how care is paid for, what you might call the business model of care. The fee for service model provides incentives to do more care, to run more tests, and the threat of malpractice encourages this. But it was driving costs through the roof, and
even the industry has known for years it must be changed.

Many doctors were considerably worried when websites began to pop up allowing consumers to rate their doctors. They feared disgruntled patients would harm their reputations and ruin their practices. Some even ask their patients to sign a "gag order" prohibiting them from expressing their opinions of the doctor on the Internet. But a new study urges doctors to remain calm.
