The doctor will see you now — Please log on
The New York Times Share
One day last summer, Charlie Martin felt a sharp pain in his lower back. But he
couldn't jump into his car and rush to the doctor's office or the emergency room: Martin, a crane operator, was working on an oil rig in the South China Sea off Malaysia. He could, though, get in touch with a doctor thousands of miles away, via two-way video. Using an electronic stethoscope that a paramedic on the rig held in place, Dr. Oscar W. Boultinghouse, an emergency medicine physician in Houston, listened to Martin's heart. More

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has proposed simplification of its rules on credentialing and granting privileges to hospitals and clinicians
that provide telemedicine services. The proposed change would allow hospitals to turn to a third-party organization to verify the credentials of providers seeking telemedicine privileges under Medicare and Medicaid, although each hospital's governing body still would make the final decision on granting privileges.

Each day, thousands of retired veterans don an electronic cuff at home that records their pulse and blood pressure and sends the information to care coordinators at the Veterans Health Administration.
The patients also punch buttons in an electronic desktop box to indicate whether they feel shortness of breath or have swollen ankles. The care coordinators flag all problems that need immediate attention.

The Wall Street Journal
Share

More than half of all Americans with high blood pressure and 30 percent of those taking medication for the condition don't have their hypertension under control, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Physicians and researchers are trying to figure out how to boost those rates, and a study presented recently suggests one method that may work at least for some people. Kaiser Permanente Colorado wanted to see if an easy
home-based monitoring system would lead to better control.

Recently, 10 physicians working in the Chicago area became the first to offer a Web-based tool, called MedWaitTime, that allows patients to check whether their doctor is running behind prior to an appointment, The Wall Street Journal reports. Vishal Mehta — an orthopedic surgeon and founder of Medical Wait Time, which developed the tool — said he expects a major physical therapy chain and two hospital systems to begin
offering the tool soon as well. Patients can access the MedWaitTime website up to two hours before their appointment and can choose to receive text messages alerting them about wait times.
