HHS awards $83.9M to boost health IT

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced June 3 $83.9 million in grants to 45 organizations to help networks of health centers adopt electronic health records and other health information technology systems. The funds are part of the $2 billion allotted to HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to expand health care services to low-income and uninsured individuals through its health center program. More

It's happened again: FTC delays Red Flags Rule enforcement

The Federal Trade Commission delayed enforcement of the Red Flags Rule for a fifth time, this time extending the date seven months. Enforcement was scheduled for June 1. It now has changed to Dec. 31. The FTC says on its website that the delay comes at the request of Congress as it "considers legislation that would affect the scope of entities covered by the rule." Home monitoring gives heart failure patients boost

Heart failure patients who used an interactive telehealth system with motivational support tools at home spent less time in the hospital and reported their quality of life had significantly improved during the 12-month evaluation period, according to a new study. The research, called CARME (Catalan Remote Management Evaluation) was conducted at the Spanish Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, and supported by Royal Philips Electronics, The Netherlands-based conglomerate that is the parent company of Andover, Mass.-based Philips Healthcare. Fourteen percent of parents surveyed said they are able communicate online or via e-mail with their children's health care providers regarding minor illnesses or injuries, while 47 percent said such access would be very helpful, according to a new national poll on children's health. AMA leads suit to block FTC rule telling doctors to police ID theft

Organized medicine is turning to the courts for relief from what physicians say is an overreaching government mandate that ropes them into the same category as financial institutions and threatens relationships with patients by requiring doctors to police identity theft. The American Medical Association and two other medical organizations on May 21 sued the Federal Trade Commission to block the agency from subjecting physicians to its Red Flags Rule. More

The Federal Trade Commission's Red Flags Rule requires businesses offering credit to come up with a written policy for finding, preventing and dealing with identity theft. But the law is controversial and has been delayed several times — most recently when the FTC pushed off until Dec. 31 the implementation originally scheduled for June 1. The American Bar Association sued last year, saying the law shouldn't apply to lawyers, and a judge agreed. (An FTC appeal is pending.) More
