Several federal agencies, including the Federal Communications Commission, Rural Utilities Service, Health
and Human Services, and Veterans Administration, have supported telemedicine efforts. Now they are using social media to garner new ideas from the public about the power of it. This year is a tipping point in terms of federal investment, medical innovation, organizational interest and public awareness. These agencies are interested in learning from both the people receiving telemedicine-based services, as well as the people working with organizations that establish and use these systems to
provide care. A forum on the Department of Agriculture's open government site is devoted to "The Power of Telemedicine" and would like to hear from people using or interested in using telemedicine.

Federal regulators are proposing changes to expand use of the $400 million government program that
subsidizes Internet services at hospitals, clinics and other health care facilities in rural areas. The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously July 15 to consider changes to its rural health care program, one of four programs paid for by the $8 billion federal fund that subsidizes telecommunications services in poor and rural areas. The FCC said that despite great need for high-speed Internet connections at rural health care facilities, it believes the rural health care program
is underused because it has not reached its annual spending cap in the past.

For The Record

Concerned about the labored breathing of a young surgical patient whose breathing tube recently had been removed, the fellow manning the overnight shift in Boston's MassGeneral Hospital for Children's
pediatric ICU placed a call to Dr. Phoebe Yager, the attending physician on call. But it wasn't just any call. It was a video-enabled "home-to-hospital" call that allowed Yager to assess the patient in conjunction with the unit team, establish that his breathing actually was improved compared with earlier in the day, and even reassure the boy's mother that he was indeed improving — all without losing valuable time commuting to assess the situation in person.
