Thyroid hormone levels and bone density in men Clinical Thyroidology for Patients Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
It is well established that thyroid hormones affect bone metabolism. Bone turnover is increased in hyperthyroidism and decreased in hypothyroidism. This suggests that individuals with hyperthyroidism have a lower bone mineral density than people whose thyroid hormones are normal. This lower bone mineral density probably places hyperthyroid patients at a greater risk for osteoporotic fractures of the spine, hips and wrists. Conversely, individuals with hypothyroidism may have a higher bone density and thus be at lower risk for osteoporotic fractures. More EPA to expand chemicals testing for endocrine disruption US Environmental Protection Agency Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has identified a list of 134 chemicals that will be screened for their potential to disrupt the endocrine system. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interact with and possibly disrupt the hormones produced or secreted by the human or animal endocrine system, which regulates growth, metabolism and reproduction. Administrator Lisa P. Jackson has made it a top priority to ensure the safety of chemicals, and this is another step in this process. More Rehospitalization among elderly patients with thyroid cancer after thyroidectomy are prevalent and costly Annals of Surgical Oncology Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Thyroid cancer increases in incidence and aggressiveness with age. The elderly are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. Reducing rates of rehospitalization would lower cost and improve quality of care. This is the first study to report population-level information characterizing rehospitalization after thyroidectomy among the elderly. More Thyrogen on track after fill/finish revalidation FiercePharma Manufacturing Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Revalidation of fill/finish equipment caused the delay in Thyrogen shipping that was reported recently, not faulty equipment. The revalidation is standard within good manufacturing practices, says Genzyme spokesperson Erin Emlock. Fill/finish is the only part of Thyrogen production that takes place at Genzyme's Allston Landing site. The cancer treatment is manufactured at a plant in Framingham, Mass., some 20 miles west of the Boston-area facility. Thyroid nodules are quite common in the general population. Nodules may be detected by palpation in up to 5-10 percent of people and by ultra-sonography in up to 50 percent or more. The vast majority (>80 percent) are benign colloid nodules and most are part of a multinodular goiter. Around 15 percent of palpable nodules are benign follicular adenomas. Around 5 percent are thyroid cancers. More
Transient hypothyroxinemia may affect brain development in preterm infants Clinical Thyroidology for Patients Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Thyroid hormone is very important for normal brain development. During the third trimester of pregnancy, the baby gets thyroid hormone from the mother as well as its' own thyroid. When a baby is born prematurely, thyroid hormone levels are frequently lower than normal for a period of time then increase back to the normal range (transient hypothyroxinemia). It is unclear whether the effect of this period of low thyroid hormone levels has any effect on the baby's brain development. More How much does availability of iodized salt improve iodine nutrition? IDD Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
We would expect broader distribution of iodized salt within countries would be associated with better iodine nutrition. A recent study shows that for both developed and developing countries, wider availability of iodized salt is associated with higher median urinary iodine excretion (UI) in school children (one of the more readily available indicators of iodine status). More Misconceptions and new conceptions about thyroid cancer Korea Herald Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Thyroid cancer is the most common and rapidly increasing cancer in females in Korea since 2007. The reason for the increased prevalence in recent years has not yet been verified. But the development of diagnostic technology is believed to be detecting more cases. About 40 percent of the total population is considered to have a mass in the thyroid gland but just 5 percent of them are thought to be cancerous. More Utilization of total thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer in children Annals of Surgical Oncology Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Recent recommendations suggest that total thyroidectomy (TT) is the surgical management of choice for differentiated thyroid cancer in children. The objective of this study is to assess trends in extent of surgical resection for differentiated thyroid cancer in children over the past two decades and to identify patient, tumor or hospital factors associated with use of TT.
