Beginning July 1, 2017, the surgeons in some states will be required by CMS to separately report all post-operative care provided for certain surgical procedures. The CY 2017 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) final rule adopted a data reporting requirement for practitioners furnishing specified global procedures in Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, and Rhode Island. CMS will use reported data, along with other data to establish payment rates under the PFS.
Who Must Report?
All practitioners who are in groups of 10 or more (“practitioner” includes both physicians and non-physician practitioners) who provide 10- or 90- day global services in the nine states listed above are required to report post-operative visits starting July 1, 2017.
CMS created a list of 293 codes using the criteria of procedure codes reported annually by more than 100 practitioners and that are either reported more than 10,000 times or have allowed charges in excess of $10 million annually. To view the list of 293 codes, please visit the CMS website here.
Send questions to the AUGS Coding Committee, here.

Acupuncture in the lumbosacral region appears to be an effective treatment for women with stress urinary incontinence that rivals behavioral treatments such as pelvic floor muscle training, researchers found.
In a randomized, participant-blinded, controlled clinical study, the mean decrease in urine leakage was 9.9 g at week 6 in 252 women treated with electroacupuncture, according to Baoyan Liu, MD, of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing, and colleagues.

Women with non-neurogenic refractory OAB who responded to SNM, had a stable program for at least 3 months, with no subsequent OAB treatment were recruited. Enrolled patients completed pre-fMRI validated symptom and quality of life instruments. Stimulus settings were recorded, devices switched off (5-day washout), and instruments repeated. Three fMRI scans with simultaneous SNM stimulation were performed below, at, and above stimulus sensory threshold, using a block design, yielding brain activity maps represented by changes in blood oxygenation level dependence(BOLD).

Mounting concerns about the impact of electronic health records on patient safety have forced providers and developers to take a deeper look at some of the inherent flaws in their systems.
This year, EHR management topped the ECRI Institute's list of top 10 patient safety concerns, and experts have noted that most hospitals don't have a formal health IT safety committee to address issues within EHRs. Including health IT team members in daily clinical safety huddles, where EHRs are a common concern, is one proven way to quickly and effectively address emerging issues.

Bladder carcinoma cell lines derived from the urothelial stem cells (epithelial or mesenchymal) were used to identify candidate urothelial master transcription factors. Gene expression was measured with quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. From the initial screening of 170 transcription factors (human homologs of Drosophila segmentation genes and known master transcription factors from a database), 28 transcription factors were selected.
