The sixth week of the legislative session marks the last opportunity for committees to hear bills in their house of origination. The only exceptions to the rule are the Appropriations Committees, who are allowed to hear their own bills next week as well. As such, agendas have been heavy with the last round of bills hoping to clear the first hurdle in the process. Though the use of striker vehicles allows for some flexibility as session progresses, it is becoming apparent which bills will and will not be successful this session.

Labeling Cold War Heats Up Again

On Feb. 12, the Federal Trade Commission determined that the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau should require a flavored malt beverage called Four Loko to bear a label indicating the amount of alcohol in a serving and the number of servings in a container. While this might seem like a minor bureaucratic tweak, it has reignited a long debate about what kind of information consumers should see on the back of wine bottles and other alcoholic beverages.

Canada Offers Food Safety Funding for Wineries

Wineries in Canada are getting government funding to help update their Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points food safety system. The funding — $333,000 — will go to the Canadian Vintners Association to develop new training tools and guidelines, online training and communication materials wineries can use to educate industry members about the system, which outlines step-by-step standards for wine producers.
