Last week, the George Washington University and International Women's Media Foundation unveiled the new "Global Report on the Status Women in the News Media" at their International Conference of Women Media Leaders. A panel of women journalists representing various foreign media organizations discussed the groundbreaking report, which examines more than 500 companies in nearly 60 countries. The report shows that women represented only a third of full-time journalism positions and that that men occupied the vast majority of the management jobs and news-gathering positions in most nations. Ousted National Public Radio CEO Vivian Schiller broke her silence over her tumultuous exit at the International Women's Media Foundation in Washington, D.C. The former NPR chief said that despite the backlash, she isn't ready to abandon the media business. "I'm not done. I certainly plan to stay in journalism. I feel too passionate about it, and so yes, I will be back in some position at some point in the not too distant future," Schiller said. Miramax has named Mitzi Reaugh senior vice president for strategy and business development. Reaugh will lead the company's development efforts, including its digital initiatives, international opportunities and expansion. NBCUniversal is rounding out the top jobs in its newly created Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media Division. Cameron Blanchard and Margaret Lazo have been promoted to executive vice presidents. Blanchard will serve as lead spokesperson for the division. Lazo expands her current, executive vice president for human resources, to include oversight for all the businesses within the new division. Dawson B "Tack" Nail, veteran communications reporter and editor for Communications Daily in Washington and a former reporter for Broadcasting & Cable, died March 25 from injuries suffered in a fall, according to his employer. He was 82. Nail had been covering the business for Communications Daily since 1964, and for almost a decade before that was a reporter for Broadcasting & Cable. Local broadcast TV advertising revenue last year topped every other TV media sector in terms of percentage growth. That's according to a Television Advertising Bureau analysis of estimates from Kantar Media. Led by a surge in automotive dollars, local TV experienced a 23.5 percent gain over the previous year, according to the TVB analysis. Broadcast network TV posted a 5.7 percent gain; syndicated TV was down 2.8 percent, and network cable TV was up 10 percent. The Federal Communications Commission took steps to block advertisers and agencies from discriminating on the basis of race or ethnicity when signing contracts with broadcast stations. The advisory is aimed at advertising contracts that contain "no urban/no Spanish" clauses, which stipulate the ads can't be placed with urban or Latino stations. Stations must now certify that their agreements contain no such clause or risk the commission revoking their broadcast license. Royalty payments to artists and copyright holders from digital streaming services continue to rise. SoundExchange said such payments topped $252 million in 2010. The figure brings SoundExchange's overall distributions in its first decade to more than $600 million. When compared to the prior year, the average payment for artists was up 80 percent; for rights holders it was up 39 percent.
