ABC hints at B-word in 2 new shows about women The Associated Press via The Kansas City Star Share ![]() ![]() ![]()

Prime-time soap "GCB" is based on the book "Good Christian Bitches," although it says the B actually stands for "belles." Could this reflect something more telling, given the current climate of political rhetoric challenging reproductive rights: a linguistic representation of backsliding efforts toward gender equality? This same-sex affinity of HBO's new show "Girls" — created, directed, written and produced by 25-year-old Lena Dunham — feels extremely contemporary, part of what has prompted critics to write about the show as revolutionary. But noting female friendship as a — or the — primary source of emotional sustenance only feels strange in the context of relatively recent history; in fact it's a dynamic that is very old. More

They say that behind every great man there's a great woman. It sounds like an outmoded sentiment of stodgy sexists, but even in the 21st-century tech world, it is still true. At the biggest and most recognizable Internet companies — Amazon, Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo! and startup du jour Instagram — there are a few powerful women in the C-suites, but very few are at the head of the boardroom table. According to the World Economic Forum's 2011 Global Gender Gap Study, the U.S. ranks 68 in an evaluation of wage equality between men and women among 135 countries that represent 90 percent of the world's population. Is it "arguable" that earning a living is more important for men than for women, as a Wisconsin state senator suggested? U.S. men out-earn women and people in this country think they should continue to do so. Which means individual women, their families and our entire society will continue to pay high prices for what is essentially a broad application of outdated gender stereotypes to economic policy.
