Americans still turn most often to television and, especially, newspapers to learn about a variety of topics, but they are grazers who also venture to the websites and radio — with not much loyalty to any particular kind of platform, according to a new study. A Pew Research Center survey found a complex ecosystem, in which the most of the public goes to multiple outlets to find out what's happening in their communities. Women use social networks to connect with their friends, family and colleagues more than men, finds a new survey. Men, however, are more likely to use voice/phone communication than women. Glam Media Inc., a provider of Internet advertising services targeting women, will pay about $150 million to acquire social-networking site Ning Inc. With the acquisition, Glam will gain Ning's software tools that let people build their own social networks for a monthly fee. It's hard to see now among the clubs, competitions and champions that Gloria Peek has influenced over the years, but the USA Boxing coach wasn't always welcome in the ring. She's a woman, and women didn't box. These days, she's a head coach for the 2011 Pan American Games in October. The 60-year-old coach also has a new goal: coaching the U.S. team at the 2012 Olympics. Selected from nominations submitted by a national poll of AWM community members, the "Sixty@60" women were chosen based on their achievements, dedication, authenticity and commitment to advancing their professions. AWM will celebrate its lasting legacy and honor the "Sixty@60" at AWM's 60th Anniversary Luncheon on Nov. 3 in New York City. The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation and the Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, announced that University of Massachusetts student Amanda Shapiro is winner of the Empowering America video contest. Shapiro will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship and her winning video "Steering Their Own Course: Celebrating the Women of Empowering America" can now be viewed on AWM's website. In 1951, a group of progressive women launched what is today the Alliance for Women in Media, nearly 10,000 members strong and looking ahead to our seventh decade.
