Chelsea Clinton's first appearance as a NBC News correspondent is set for Dec. 12. The former first daughter will appear on "Rock Center With Brian Williams" during a segment about a nonprofit organization in her home state of Arkansas. The report is part of the network's "Making a Difference" franchise and was spearheaded by Clinton, notes the New York Times. More



New trend: A drop in TV households

It is still too early to say Americans are tossing away their TV sets. But clearly a growing number of people are giving up their sets, enough that Nielsen has recorded a decline in the number of households with TV sets for just the second time in history, the first being two decades ago and tied to a change in data collecting. In its recently released annual television audience report, Nielsen noted that the number of TV households will drop in 2012, from 115.9 million in 2011 to 114.7 million. That's a dip of only 1 percent, but it could be a harbinger of declines to come. More

At TV and radio outlets, little-known trove of kudos and complaints

When television and radio stations receive compliments or complaints, they put them in their "public files," a little-known but rich trove of teeth-gnashing, hand-wringing and sometimes heartfelt correspondence. Under federal law, all television and radio outlets must maintain public files and make them available for viewing. Besides the letters, the public file includes nuts-and-bolts information about each station, including descriptions of its programs and Federal Communications Commission license, and information on political advertisement spending. House Communications Subcommittee OK's spectrum auction bill

The House Communications Subcommittee approved a spectrum incentive auction bill that would give the FCC the authority to pay broadcasters for voluntarily exiting the spectrum to be auctioned for broadband use, and set aside as much as $3 billion to compensate broadcasters left behind for moving or sharing channels. The bill will now go to full committee for markup. The auction is projected to return at least $15 billion to the treasury for deficit reduction after paying broadcasters. More

They control the majority of household spending decisions, their influence is growing and they are increasingly exercising this new-found power in a variety of ways. The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation and the Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, announced that University of Massachusetts student Amanda Shapiro is winner of the Empowering America video contest. Shapiro will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship and her winning video, "Steering Their Own Course: Celebrating the Women of Empowering America," can now be viewed on AWM's website. More
