The blogosphere — arguably the first engine of the new-media age — is becoming more female, while traditional media is horning in on the blogging action, a new study said. "It's healthy and it's mature," said Shani Higgins, CEO of Technorati Media, about the state of the blogosphere. The cable industry has been working closely with representatives of the Federal Communications Commission and others to promote awareness of the first nationwide test of an Emergency Action Notification under the Emergency Alert System. The purpose of the test is to assess the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a public alert mechanism. NBCUniversal is hiring up to do more news. The organization said it is adding 130 more people to the rosters of its 10 owned-and-operated TV stations, mostly in the news departments. Valari Staab, NBC's TV station group, said much of the ramping up will take place over the next month. In addition to the new hires, the stations will produce more than 1,200 additional hours of local news a year on each station's primary broadcast channel. The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation and the Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, announced that University of Massachusetts student Amanda Shapiro is winner of the Empowering America video contest.
