Welding equipment, consumables market seen topping $7 billion
Welding Design & Fabrication    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An industrial market forecast group is predicting annual increases of 6.4 percent in U.S. demand for welding equipment and consumable products during the next three years, bringing the total market value to $7.1 billion by 2015. The Freedonia Group Inc. stated the increases in demand will be driven by continued recovery in the major domestic manufacturing industries and construction markets, as well as by the rising number of applications for welding. Demand high for welders while supply lags
The Columbus Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Katana Summit received an influx of orders for its wind turbine towers this summer, the Columbus, Neb., company set a goal of hiring up to 90 new workers. The additional manpower needed to produce the 130 massive units by mid-2012 was expected to nearly double the plant's work force during a record year for orders. But, a sign in front of the East 29th Avenue plant tells a story that is all too familiar for area manufacturers" Help is still wanted, especially when it comes to welding positions. More

Factory jobs gain while wages retreat
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturers are hiring again in America, softening a long slide in factory employment. But for a new generation of blue-collar workers, even those protected by unions, the price of employment is likely to be lower wages stretching to retirement. That is particularly true of global manufacturers like General Electric. With labor costs moving down at its appliance factories in Louisville, Ky., the company is bringing home the production of water heaters as well as some refrigerators, and expanding its work force to do so. Jeff Moad: How long will rise in US manufacturing momentum last?
Manufacturing Executive    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We seem to be seeing a shift in manufacturing momentum away from China and Europe and toward the United States. But is the current shift just a reflection of the natural economic ebb and flow. Or does it signal something more long-lasting? Recently, closely watched manufacturing indexes showed stronger-than-expected increases in U.S. manufacturing activity but slowdowns in manufacturing in China and Europe. The Institute for Supply Management's U.S. factory index for November rose to 52.7, up from 50.8 in Ocober. The rise was faster than what economists had predicted. More

Building optimism: American manufacturing re-emerges in a new form
TriplePundit.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
American manufacturing once conjured images of sweaty workers in cavernous factories churning out steel beams and station wagons. By the middle of the 20th century, a deep sense of optimism and the possibility of a solidly middle-class life for workers accompanied these images. Today, manufacturing brings to mind offshore sweatshops and abandoned U.S. factories, and this trend shows no immediate signs of ending. However, there is reason to believe that American manufacturing is alive and growing, albeit in a new form. More

Hattiesburg American    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Thirteen recent graduates of Mississippi's Jones County Junior College's pipefitting class in Greene County recently packed their bags with hopes of filling their bank accounts. The job and salary opportunities for a pipefitter are better in Canada. "I'll make about $37 an hour, which isn't bad," said Patricia Barbour, 47, of Leakesville. The laid off construction worker and former certified nurse assistant of 15 years, is now working for KBR Brown and Root in British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. She is expected to bring home about $10,000 after working three weeks and plans on working for up to six months. More

Editorial: American manufacturing needs skilled workers
The Christian Science Monitor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

Grafton manufacturers add space, workers to meet demand
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Chris Hetzer had spent several years working for a small, Wisconsin-based manufacturer owned by a Swedish company, witnessing some of the pitfalls of that arrangement. "We had no marketing and sales support, and a lot of direction from Europe," said Hetzer, who was general manager at Grafton's SKF Precision Technologies, a manufacturer of parts for companies that make aircraft, cars and other products. So when Hetzer discovered the company's corporate parent, SKF Group, was planning to sell it to a Chinese company, he fought that move and later led some investors to make their own bid. Hetzer has since become chief executive officer and part owner of what's now known as Gilman USA LLC, and the company is seeing an increase in sales. More

Work abundant in Wisconsin, nationally for Merrill Iron & Steel
Wausau Daily Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At Merrill Iron & Steel, the recession seems to be fading quickly into history. Workers at the Schofield, Wis.-based steel fabricator often put in 50 to 55 hours a week to fill job orders. Recently, they've been making the steel parts used to construct a towering, 11-story building that will house a biomass power plant at the Domtar Corp. paper mill in Rothschild. But the biomass plant, a $255 million joint project of Domtar and the Milwaukee-based utility We Energies, is only one of the latest projects for Merrill Iron. More
