Good news: It's possible to weld wood with friction
Geek.com
When you're trying to fasten two things together, you're basically trying to make them behave as though they are one. Nails, screws, glue and other fasteners all exist to combine separate things, but always by keeping them as two entities. Welding, by contrast, actually does make them one — perhaps with a structural weak point at the old junction, but a single object nonetheless. By melting small portions of the metal together, welding can create air- and water-tight seals, and extremely strong connections. But one downside is that it can only be done with certain types of materials — or so we thought.

US manufacturing looks set to grow bolder
The Wall Street Journal
Equipment spending by manufacturing companies in the U.S. will rise about 7 percent in 2014 to $211 billion, economic research firm IHS Global Insight projects. Such spending grew 3.5 percent in 2013, IHS estimates. "I think business people are pretty confident longer term," said Daniel Meckstroth, chief economist at the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, a research organization in Arlington, Va. The two-year budget deal recently reached in Congress soothed nerves, and the U.S. economy appears to be gaining strength.

In its annual survey of companies, manufacturers' organization EEF found 70 percent of firms forecast an improvement in the economy in 2014, while just 5 percent thought conditions would deteriorate. The balance of 65 percent compares with the somber outlook at the same time last year, when the reading was just 7 percent.
