Manufacturing is surprising bright spot in US economy
The New York Times    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the first time in many years, manufacturing stands out as an area of strength in the American economy. When the Labor Department reported December employment numbers, it was expected that manufacturing companies would have added jobs in two consecutive years. Until last year, there had not been a single year when manufacturing employment rose since 1997. More

The Auburn Hills automaker also plans to begin assembling a diesel version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2013, when it plans to add the third shift. The automaker, which saw its U.S. sales increase 26.2 percent in 2011 and is recovering faster than expected from its 2009 bankruptcy, said it hopes to play a key role in Detroit's resurgence. More

Greater skills expected for manufacturing jobs
American Public Media    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
More than 2 million manufacturing jobs were lost during the recession. Companies have started hiring again — but they want workers who are more highly skilled than the ones they laid off. So they're turning to local vocational programs for help. Under the watchful eye of welding teacher Leo Suhre, students are cutting through sheets of metal at Richland Community College in Decatur, Ill. The school has enough shop space for only 12 students at a time. But this year, there's been so much demand for welding courses, the college began offering classes overnight. More

Mark J. Perry: Manufacturing decline phenomenon making world much better
Carpe Diem    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In his blog for economics and finance, University of Michigan professor Mark J. Perry writes that the declining manufacturing/GDP ratio reflects declining prices for manufacturing goods, which is a sign of economic progress, not regress. The standard of living around the world today, along with global wealth and prosperity, are all much, much higher today with manufacturing representing 16 percent of total world output (including the U.S.) compared to 1970, when it was almost twice as high at almost 27 percent. "And for that progress, we should celebrate, not complain about the "decline of manufacturing," he said. More

Economy in US brightens as early data belie gloomy investors
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. economy is beginning 2012 on a brighter note in a sign investors may be too pessimistic. Payrolls rose 200,000 in December, double the gain in November, a Labor Department report showed. A weekly measure of consumer confidence ended 2011 at a five-month high. And manufacturers reported their business in December grew at the fastest pace in six months. The combination indicates the world's largest economy has enough staying power to withstand a recession in Europe and a slowdown in China. More
