April 7-8, 2015
Virginia Beach, VA

The conference will include a technical program featuring presentations on additive manufacturing, automation, new filler materials and NDT. Presenters will discuss a newly developed welding electrode that upon cooling does not shrink which will help reduce distortion effects and perhaps negate the need for weld toe peening required for fatigue life extension. The latest in aluminum welding from a true expert in the field will be presented. Several presenters will highlight new methods of automating the welding operations in shipyards. The recently introduced NDT method of computed RT will be discussed as well as the use of artificial intelligence as applied to NDT. As keynote speaker, Johnnie DeLoach the Head of the Materials Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division will kick off the conference.

The $140,000-a-year welding job
The Wall Street Journal
Justin Friend’s parents have doctoral degrees and have worked as university lecturers and researchers. So Mr. Friend might have been expected to head for a university after graduating from high school in Bryan, Texas, five years ago. Instead, he attended Texas State Technical College in Waco, and received a two-year degree in welding. In 2013, his first full year as a welder, his income was about $130,000, more than triple the average annual wages for welders in the U.S. In 2014, Friend’s income rose to about $140,000.

Girls draw a bead on welding program
Homer News
For six weeks before the holiday break, 15 girls from Voznesenka, Kachemak Selo, and Razdolna, Alaska, schools set sparks flying. From 4-9 p.m., two days a week for a total of 60 hours, they hid their beautiful long dresses beneath unbecoming, but protective ensembles of coveralls, leather jackets, gloves and helmets to learn the art of welding from Homer High School instructor Mickey Todd. Officially known as the After-School Welding Academy, it was sponsored through the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District’s Career and Technical Education programs.

Manufacturers draw in millennials with new training approach
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette via Times-Leader

But there’s another: teaching millennials once they find them. Employers are discovering that the next generation of workers learns differently than they did. "Millennials like to see results right now," said Scott Covert, who runs an in-house training program at Penn United Technologies, a tool-and-die shop that employs about 600.
