Favorable forecast: 5 manufacturing trends to be thankful for
IndustryWeek
Late fall brought North American manufacturers plenty of reasons to be grateful. In the United States, November production as measured by the Institute for Supply Management rose from 56.4 to 57.3, the fastest expansion since April 2011. Over the same period, Canadian manufacturing as measured by the RBC Purchasing Managers Index slipped from 55.6 to 55.3. Still, times are good: Any score over 50 represents growth.

Bombardier delays CSeries again as debut moves to 2015
Bloomberg
Bombardier Inc. delayed its CSeries jetliner for a fourth time, saying the aircraft won't enter commercial service until late next year instead of 2014 because it needs more time for flight tests. The smaller CS100 model is now set to debut in the second half of 2015, with the larger CS300 to follow six months later, Bombardier said in a recent statement. The timeline erased plans for a CS100 introduction about a year after the first flight, which came Sept. 16, and the stock fell the most since Oct. 31.

That's the word from researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, who are working to revolutionize 3-D printing, as well as the way that companies build products ranging from jet engines and satellites to football helmets.

US carmakers use aluminum, carbon fiber to cut weight
Agence France-Presse
More vehicles than ever on display at the Detroit auto show are using nontraditional materials — aluminum, carbon fiber, magnesium — as U.S. automakers fight to get vehicle weight down and gas mileage up. Ford's introduction of aluminum body panels for its workhorse F-150 pickup truck was a radical shift which it said would knock up to 700 pounds from the truck's weight.

Mississippi county's despair over what could have been fades as metal fabricating grows
Mississippi Business Journal
Three decades ago Tishomingo County, Miss., endured the heartbreak of losing a pair of multibillion-dollar federal economic development projects — a Tennessee Valley Authority nuclear plant and a NASA rocket assembly facility. But, as fortune would have it, the federal government by the mid-1980s had set the stage for a new era of economic growth for the northeast Mississippi county and its border neighbors in Tennessee and Alabama.

Obama announces institute to create manufacturing jobs
The New York Times
It was President Obama’s first policy-related trip of 2014, but he used it to take care of some unfinished business from 2013. With days left until his State of the Union address on Jan. 28, Obama hastened to make good on a pledge from last year's speech, announcing the creation of a high-tech manufacturing institute aimed at creating well-paying jobs. Speaking to 2,000 students at North Carolina State University, which is leading a group of universities and companies that established the institute, Obama said it was the kind of innovation that would reinvigorate the nation's manufacturing economy.

The New York Times
For the last two years, Josh Younger, 19, has been learning how to fuse heavy steel pipes used in nuclear power plants, spending hours each day behind a welding helmet and surrounded by the acrid smell of burned metal. The job, called high-integrity welding, is one that most young people in Britain probably do not know or care much about. But it is essential to keeping the economy turning. And so are many other jobs that British youths tend to overlook.

Threaded rivets keep new product made in the US
Assembly Magazine
Donny McCall fought sharks and won. A guest on ABC's business-themed show "Shark Tank," McCall respectfully disagreed with the venture capitalist "sharks." They said he needed to outsource manufacturing of his Invis-A-Rack folding cargo rack to China to do what's best for the business and create better margins. He insisted on making the product in America. Fortunately, the folks at Dee Zee Inc., a manufacturer of truck accessories based in Des Moines, Iowa, got word of Invis-A-Rack as a result of "Shark Tank."
