Fiery bright future for girls learning welding
Cincinnati.com
High school junior Megan Thompson readies for her next class lesson by stepping into a tiny, cemented booth and lighting a white-hot, 6,000-degree torch. The torch's dangerous sparks reflect brightly in the protective, darkened visor of her welder's helmet, which she has proudly decorated in bright, feminine colors. The 17-year-old Fairfield, Ohio, girl's work future in welding is nearly as bright as the blinding torch she deftly wields.

AWS 9th Shipbuilding Conference
AWS
Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel
April 7-8, 2015
Virginia Beach, VA

The conference will include a technical program featuring presentations on additive manufacturing, automation, new filler materials and NDT. Presenters will discuss a newly developed welding electrode that upon cooling does not shrink which will help reduce distortion effects and perhaps negate the need for weld toe peening required for fatigue life extension. The latest in aluminum welding from a true expert in the field will be presented. Several presenters will highlight new methods of automating the welding operations in shipyards. The recently introduced NDT method of computed RT will be discussed as well as the use of artificial intelligence as applied to NDT. As keynote speaker, Johnnie DeLoach the Head of the Materials Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division will kick off the conference.
