Growing number of women looking at welding as a career
Aiken Standard    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dorothy Williams' well-manicured fingernails complete with a fresh coat of shimmery red polish are hidden under heavy-duty gloves while carefully wielding her welding tools. Williams, of North Augusta, Ga., is one of a growing number of women looking at welding as a potential career across the country. "It's fun, and it's challenging," Williams said. "You're doing something that makes a difference and, also, it's not just for men. It's structured, it's a great job opportunity, and you can get great job benefits." More

The American    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It is generally acknowledged that there is a shortage of skilled manufacturing workers in the United States, but estimates of the size of the shortage vary widely. At a time when unemployment in the United States remains stubbornly high, and while the U.S. manufacturing sector may be in the early stages of a renaissance, having a shortage of skilled workers is a serious challenge that needs to be addressed. In this article, we discuss the various estimates of the current skilled worker shortage, consider the demographic trends that will affect the future skills gap, and explore the alternative approaches to closing the skills gap. Welders in demand across the country
KTTC-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBriefIt's not your father's job anymore. The nation is experiencing a shortage of welders, drawing young people to the trade. That's inspired one business to start a welding program. The three-day class at the Huber Welding Institute in Owatonna, Minn., is meant to teach students the basics of one type of welding. Welding is a complicated trade that can take years to learn, but learning a few basic techniques can give people the skills they need for some entry level jobs. More

A tree grows in Wisconsin, one metal petal at a time
The Capital Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A tree is growing in the most unlikely of places. In a garage-like workshop on the south side of Madison, Wis., sparks fly and the smell of melting metal fills the air. This is where, over the next year, a grand sculpture to greet eastbound visitors to the Williamson-Marquette neighborhood will take shape. "It's an aesthetic adventure," said Erika Koivunen, a metal sculptor known for making butterflies and birds out of nails, spikes and silverware. Koivunen is getting the community involved in what's called a "welding happy hour." More

Career education classes declining despite interest among many students
The Register-Guard    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sparks fly in the metal shop at Springfield High School in Eugene, Ore., where 17-year-old junior Chayse Lee is welding the cross-member for the nose of an electric car. Lee is the kind of kid who is comfortable working with his hands, and he likes the teachers who run the manufacturing and engineering department at his school. But while CTE programs have broadened in recent years to include subjects as varied as health sciences and sports marketing, the number of classes being offered is in decline, a result of years of budget squeezes, teacher retirements and fewer training programs for new teachers. Crucially, there were hopeful signals coming from the United States and China, the world's top economies. More

Robot makers spread global gospel of automation
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The robot equipment industry has one word for the alarmist articles and television news programs that predict a robot is about to steal your job: Fiddlesticks! During a presentation at Automate 2013, Henrik I. Christensen, the Kuka Chair of Robotics at Georgia Institute of Technology's College of Computing, sharply criticized a recent "60 Minutes" report on automation that was based on the work of the MIT economists Andrew McAfee and Erik Brynjolfsson. New Tec bought the computerized equipment in hopes of attracting more people to the welding profession, said Brandon Lemer, executive director. Welders are in short supply in Aberdeen, S.D., and Lemer wants to change that. More

Take a trip down the glowing, electric car charging highway of the future
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Innovation in transportation typically happens at the level of the vehicle. The past decade has seen the growth of hybrids, electrics and velomobiles. Every new year brings new car models, while buses, trains and subways continue to get nicer and "smarter." In the Netherlands, a design studio has made it its mission to make transportation safer and more environmentally friendly by redesigning not the car, but the roads themselves. More

Is manufacturing 'cool' again?
Project Syndicate    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Once upon a time, ambitious young people with a knack for math and science went to work in manufacturing. They designed planes, computers and furniture, figured out how to lay out an assembly line, helped to make new cars faster and refrigerators more efficient, pushed the limits of computer chips and invented new medicines. But, as the role of manufacturing diminished in advanced economies, the brightest talents tended to gravitate to finance and other service fields that were growing rapidly — and paying well. More

Ultrasonic metal welding for lithium-ion battery cells
EWI    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The three most common metal-to-metal joints in a lithium-ion battery pack are foil-to-tab, tab-to-tab and tab-to-bus. All three joints pose joining challenges, but of the three, welding multiple layers of foil to a tab is the most challenging. The joint is often made up of dissimilar metals, the metal thickness is mismatched, and one side — the tab — is relatively thick while the other is made up of multiple, extremely thin, layers.
