International Welding Summit coming to the US

The International Institute of Welding will conduct its Annual Assembly summit July 8-14, in Denver. Although the conference is in its 65th year, it has been held in the United States only three times, most recently in 1997. The upcoming summit will provide a special opportunity for those involved in the welding industry to meet with their counterparts from all over the world. The 2012 IIW Annual Assembly officially will be hosted by the IIW American Council, which consists of the American Welding Society, the Edison Welding Institute, and the Welding Research Council. Welder-fabricator program unveiled at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College

A welder-fabricator apprenticeship program starting at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College as early as February is aimed at helping bolster the skills of the area work force while helping meet employer demand for workers with fabrication skills. The apprenticeship program could start with an initial group of about one dozen participants in the four-year program, said Todd Kiel, NWTC apprenticeship manager. It's envisioned program participants will come from — and fill — jobs within the marine sector, paper industry and manufacturing sectors, among others. The program is designed to give participants an American Welding Society certification. More

First Chinese auto plant in Europe to open in February

Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor will open a plant in Bulgaria in February, producing the first Chinese cars assembled in Europe, its local partner Litex Motors said. The plant in the northern village of Bahovitsa near Lovech has been test-producing since mid-November. It has a planned annual capacity of 50,000 cars for the Bulgarian and European market and will employ up to 2,000 people. More

Caterpillar posts record revenue

Caterpillar said that it earned record profit for the fourth quarter driven by sales outside the U.S. market, and forecast higher earnings in 2012. Caterpillar posted $1.5 billion in net income for the final three months of 2011, up a hefty 60 percent from the year-ago period. Earnings were $2.32 per share, far ahead of the average analyst estimate of $1.73. More

Japan manufacturing exodus 'large' cause for trade concern

An exodus of manufacturing jobs from Japan may prolong trade balance concerns after the nation reported its first annual trade deficit in 31 years. Panasonic Corp., Japan's largest appliance maker, is moving the headquarters of its $57 billion procurement operation to Singapore. Honda Motor Co., the nation's third-largest carmaker, said this month it will build its new NSX "supercar" in Ohio as the company shifts more output to North America. More




Obama plans lease sale for Gulf oil, gas development

President Barack Obama said he plans to make nearly 38 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico available for oil and gas exploration in a lease sale scheduled to take place in June. The proposed lease sale includes blocks in the central Gulf of Mexico containing nearly 31 billion barrels of oil and 134 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to a Department of Interior statement. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management estimates the sale could result in the production of 1 billion barrels of oil and 4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. More

Durable goods up a strong 3 percent in December

New orders for manufactured durable goods in December increased $6.2 billion or 3 percent to $214.5 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This increase, up five of the last six months, followed a 4.3 percent November increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 2.1 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 3.5 percent. More

Energy boom creates growing demand in welding industry

Eastern Montana's energy boom is benefiting the state with thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in new tax revenues. Among those jobs are welding positions and there's a growing demand for qualified welders. "What I'm seeing is actually a tremendous growth in the industry, and most of it is energy related," explains Bob Blackwell, MSU-Billings College of Technology welding instructor. More

Tenaris, CRC-Evans to package offshore tubular line pipe, welding technologies

Tenaris and CRC-Evans have agreed to offer an integral package of tubular line pipe and welding technologies directed at offshore operations. The cooperation agreement will allow the companies to jointly develop specialized pipe metal compositions and properties alongside welding development and qualifications. This agreement follows one in early 2011 that includes use of CRC-Evans welding solutions at the Tenaris R&D Center in Mexico. More
