Manufacturing growth quickens in January
Reuters
Manufacturing grew in January at its fastest pace in nine months and looked likely to drive economic growth in the first three months of 2013, an industry survey showed. Firms tied the surge to a steady rise in domestic demand; the survey's new orders component rose to 57.4, its highest since May 2010. The output component rose to 56.8 from 54.5 in December. January's reading was the highest in 10 months.

2 robots are better than 1 for nimble welding applications
Plant Engineering
ABB Robotics attached a nimble six-axis robot on the end of a long-reach four-axis machine, for a 4.96-meter total reach — 195.28 inches — in 10 axes of motion, ideal for robotic welding. The Automate 2013 demonstration showed the robot with a welding tip quickly tracing a rotating vehicle frame, which was one more axis guided by the same ABB IRC 5 robot controller working the integrated robots — capable of controlling 36 axes total.

Decline in number of US manufacturing factories is not due to offshoring
IndustryWeek
The perception that firms leave and set up shop on foreign soil simply for cost purposes is misplaced, according to a new Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation report. MAPI Chief Economist Daniel J. Meckstroth, Ph.D., argues that U.S. companies commonly open operations abroad to serve the local markets — it's not about finding the cheapest way to make their products.

Will blueprint change the image of blue-collar jobs?
Virginia Business
"Thank God for Mississippi" once was a familiar expression in the Deep South, not because of any admiration for William Faulkner, Jefferson Davis or Ole Miss football. Mississippi, it seemed, always brought up the rear, making its neighbors look slightly better. But Mississippi is fighting this bottom-of-the-barrel stereotype. In the past eight years, it has chalked up a series of impressive economic development wins as a result of a strategic plan originally called Blueprint Mississippi, today known as Momentum Mississippi. Now Virginia — one of the wealthiest and best-educated states in the nation, according to the Census Bureau — is borrowing a page from Mississippi and 11 other "blueprint" states.

Rural counties seek skilled workers to fill jobs
Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier
Brent Matthias has a golden headache. So does Jeff Kolb. Both economic development officials in Northeast Iowa — Matthias for Bremer County and Kolb for Butler and Grundy counties — are charged with marketing communities with relatively low unemployment rates to prospective employees. Apparently, good help can be hard to find. Many Northeast Iowa communities, including those mentioned above, are looking to hire. Openings in manufacturing, including agriculture-based businesses, are some of the most plentiful, according to Kolb and Matthias. In Bremer County, the only sector seeking more workers is health care.

Massachusetts resident aims to represent USA in his craft
The Millbury Sutton Chronicle
Welding was never Andrew Cardin's first choice or even in his top four. The Sutton, Mass., native chose automotive technology and three additional exploratory classes at Blackstone Valley Tech to pursue during high school. After a twist of fate, he added machine/welding shop as a replacement class, somewhat reluctantly. Today, a few years removed from high school, Cardin's passion for the craft burns deeper than his welding torch. As it turns out, his talents might just become "world-class" by February.

Deaf since birth, without aid from interpreters until fifth grade, Chris Cayton struggled in school and graduated from high school without ambition, lacking both basic education skills and a sense of self-worth. The birth of his son Grant in 2007 motivated him to change and he entered the welding program at Lower Columbia College, graduating with honors in 2011. For Cayton's effort to prevail over his disability, the state Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges honored him with a $500 "Transforming Lives" award.
