American manufacturing and welding to women: We want you!
    CNBC
Six years after the start of a deep recession and a growing call for more middle-class manufacturing jobs, one American industry is tackling workforce development in a unique way. Welding is courting fresh recruits — women in particular. Mention women welders and "Flashdance" might come to mind. The 1983 movie starred Jennifer Beals as a welder by day and dancer by night. But the industry has advanced beyond the bulky machinery depicted in the film.

NASA boards the 3-D manufacturing train
Goddard Space Flight Center via SpaceDaily
Given NASA's unique needs for highly customized spacecraft and instrument components, additive manufacturing, or 3-D printing, offers a compelling alternative to more traditional manufacturing approaches. "We're not driving the additive manufacturing train, industry is," said Ted Swanson, the assistant chief for technology for the Mechanical Systems Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Swanson is the center's point of contact for additive manufacturing. "But NASA has the ability to get on-board to leverage it for our unique needs."

David Taylor may be a first-year agricultural mechanics teacher at Splendora High School, but he is no stranger to the field. In recent years, this technical field has gained popularity among students looking to learn valuable career and technical skills — skills that may be able to give them the edge in their future career pursuits. "I have always been involved in ag mechanics in some way since I was a young boy," said Taylor. "It's exciting to see the kids working and involved in the program the way that they are."

The United States needs to establish a "continuum of learning" so workers can keep up with a rapidly changing and increasingly technical manufacturing environment, the co-chairs of a commission that is focusing on job creation for small- and medium-sized manufacturers, recently told a University of Virginia audience. Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and former governor and Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., are co-chairing the University of Virginia Miller Center commission, part of an effort to address challenges facing America's middle class.

    Welding innovation improves manufacturing versatility
    Automation World
Friction stir welding is a technology that has crept quietly onto the scene over the years with a niche play in the aerospace industry, welding aluminum components together. FSW was developed in 1991 by The Welding Institute and consists of an innovative mechanical principle — heating two adjoining pieces to their plastic state by plunging a rotating tool head into them and mixing them together. The FSW technique offers several advantages over conventional welding methods, including lower cost operation since it requires no consumables, a more consistent/stronger weld, and a better quality weld due to the weld being formed at a lower temperature.
