Obama to propose spending to boost jobs in State of Union
Bloomberg
President Barack Obama will use his State of the Union address to focus on job creation and the struggles of American families, marking a renewed emphasis on the economic issues that defined his first term. Obama previewed his Feb. 12 speech in remarks before House Democrats meeting in Virginia recently, where he advocated "an economy that works for everybody." "I'm going to be talking about making sure that we're focused on job creation here in the United States of America," he said.

How women can help spark the troubled manufacturing industry
The Huffington Post (commentary)
Only 30 percent of the 14 million Americans employed in manufacturing are women, and we certainly don't only need their skills. We want their leadership. Charisma, character and courage are must-haves to lead the way in this new era of the knowledge worker. We need women who are ready, willing and able to change the approach, and do their part to ignite an industry that is perceived in a very negative light.

Where is manufacturing making a comeback?
Pew Stateline
Several Rust Belt states are seeing a resurgence of manufacturing, led surprisingly by Michigan. In the last three years, Michigan gained nearly 70,000 manufacturing jobs, the most of any other state. Indiana and Ohio followed with each gaining some 50,000 jobs. Nationwide, more than a half-million manufacturing jobs have been created since the end of 2009. Good news to be sure, but still not enough to make up for the more than 2 million jobs the sector lost during the 2007-2009 recession.

Manufacturing companies said to be 'begging' for welders
Omaha World-Herald
The seriousness of the situation was clear as soon as Jack Boysen started talking. Boysen, a Valmont Industries supervisor in Valley, Neb., was explaining how the plant's 220 welders are being pushed to their professional and physical limits. Seven days of work nearly every week and heaps of overtime force the company to rotate three shifts so that every other Sunday workers can have some time to spend with their families.

2 robots are better than 1 for nimble welding applications
Plant Engineering
ABB Robotics attached a nimble six-axis robot on the end of a long-reach four-axis machine, for a 4.96-meter total reach — 195.28 inches — in 10 axes of motion, ideal for robotic welding. The Automate 2013 demonstration showed the robot with a welding tip quickly tracing a rotating vehicle frame, which was one more axis guided by the same ABB IRC 5 robot controller working the integrated robots — capable of controlling 36 axes total.

Red Bull's F1 manufacturing video is delightfully wonderful
Jalopnik
VideoBrief This is Red Bull Racing's launch video for their 2013 F1 car. It shows an obsession with high-tech manufacturing on par with Metropolis. The problem with Formula One is that the technology is so advanced, that it's hard to get a sense of what the cars are actually made of, and what they're doing. Well, this video shows you perfectly. We can't stop watching them make the transmission. There's something about those tiny gears and forks coming together like a watchmaker's high-speed fantasy.

Florida contractors expect critical shortage of skilled workers
Business Observer
Veteran electricians, mechanics, HVAC installers, welders and carpenters are reaching retirement age with the baby boomer generation. Meanwhile, the ranks of skilled construction workers already were thinned by the recession, which dramatically slowed development and drove thousands of workers out of Florida in search of paying projects.
