Training partnership teaches welding — and life skills
Journal Sentinel
Growing up about 30 years ago, Super Steel Inc. President and CEO Dirk Smith says, he learned a work ethic and other essential skills that he believes are missing now in some job applicants. "My parents instilled that in me," said Smith, adding that he didn't have to learn many of the "soft skills" in the workplace because he had already been taught them at home. Now, Smith says, he sees young people lacking knowledge of basic things such as showing up to work on time. Sometimes they don't have a bank account, which is a problem because Super Steel, a Milwaukee manufacturer and metal fabricator, has a direct-deposit payroll.

The conference will include a technical program featuring presentations on additive manufacturing, automation, new filler materials and NDT. Presenters will discuss a newly developed welding electrode that upon cooling does not shrink which will help reduce distortion effects and perhaps negate the need for weld toe peening required for fatigue life extension. The latest in aluminum welding from a true expert in the field will be presented. Several presenters will highlight new methods of automating the welding operations in shipyards. The recently introduced NDT method of computed RT will be discussed as well as the use of artificial intelligence as applied to NDT. As keynote speaker, Johnnie DeLoach the Head of the Materials Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division will kick off the conference.

New Orleans' Michoud facility builds the Space Launch System
The Times-Picayune via Miami Herald
When Kelley Easley first arrived at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in 1982, everything was big. Bigger than anything he had ever seen. It was easy to get lost in the 43-acre eastern New Orleans facility. Easley, then a Louisiana State University engineering graduate hired to work on mechanical design for the NASA Space Shuttle external tank, relied on numbered columns inside to tell where he was. He saw giant tools in action every day, some the size of a small building. He was in awe the first time he saw a completed 35-ton tank roll out.

California's manufacturing sector, clobbered during recession, clawing its way back
The Sacramento Bee
At Tri Tool Inc.’s sprawling facility in Rancho Cordova, California, employees work among massive pieces of precision-cut metal, exotic-looking tools and tons of computerized, complex machinery. It’s just what you expect from a company that touts itself as a worldwide designer and manufacturer of precision portable machine tools for oil pipelines and other heavy-duty industries. It’s also the kind of old-school industrial manufacturing operation that some say is an endangered species in California.

Bringing virtual welding, 3-D printing to school
DL-Online
When Campbell-Tintah business and technology instructor Richard Osman brought a handful of his students to the 2014 Minnesota School Boards Association convention to demonstrate one of their innovative education programs, little did he anticipate where it would lead. But the students’ demonstration of some of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) modules available to their class — a 3-D printer, laser engraver and welding simulator — was seen by a couple of area school superintendents who were inspired to try to bring a similar STEM program to their own districts.

Calumet Welding Center in Indiana trains next generation of welders
The Times of Northwest Indiana
Young people have been guided away from the labor trades to the point where contractors working on major construction projects in Northwest Indiana have had to import skilled tradesmen from other states, such as for the recent $4.2 billion modernization of the BP Whiting Refinery. The demand for certain types of tradesmen runs deep. The United States will need an estimated 200,000 welders, as the current generation continues to retire.
