Can Google's robots build a new future for US manufacturing?
    The Verge
During a dinner with Silicon Valley executives in 2011, President Barack Obama famously asked Apple CEO Steve Jobs what he needed to do to bring iPhone manufacturing back to the U.S. Jobs replied: "Those jobs aren't coming back." At the time, it seemed like a reasonable assertion. U.S. manufacturing was in the middle of a decades-long decline, and American companies seemed unable to compete with the low labor and production costs in China. But that may be changing, some say, thanks to an unlikely catalyst: robots.

    Miami

The AWS Safety and Health Committee will conduct a workshop for welding, brazing and thermal spray consumables manufacturers about meeting new OSHA standards for product labeling and hazard communication. Some have estimated that the new GHS (Globally Harmonized System) Safety Data Sheet reporting requirements are four to eight times more laborious than those of a traditional MSDS.

Soft metal weld makes for stronger infrastructure
    Science Network WA via Phys.org
Scientists have found applying a soft metal layer before welding hard metals can act as a sufficient buffer to address fatigue behavior in welded metal. The research investigated the effects of tensile overload on high-strength low-alloy steels that are widely used in the mining industry for equipment like storage tanks and excavator buckets. The scientists used flux-cored arc welding and different widths of soft metals as the buffer layer to determine the fatigue life of the alloy and whether introducing a buffer layer would offset weakening of welded material.

Want women to earn more? Train them for manufacturing
    The Atlantic Cities
Helping single working mothers move into jobs traditionally held by men could help more than 4.1 million low-income families move toward joining the middle class, according to a report released this week by the Working Poor Families Project, a nonprofit that studies state workforce development policies. If women moved into jobs in manufacturing, skilled trades or transportation in greater numbers, they could increase their earnings by up to 30 percent. Currently, nearly half of all low-income, working women — those who earn below 200 percent of the federal poverty line and who head households — work primarily in 16 occupations clustered around the service and retail sectors.

Newport News leads Virginia in manufacturing job gains in 2013
    Daily Press
Newport News led Virginia in manufacturing employment gains as the manufacturing sector added more jobs in Hampton Roads last year, according to recent reports. The primary factor is Newport News Shipbuilding increased overall employment by about 900 workers in 2013, company spokeswoman Christie Miller said. Parent company Huntington Ingalls now employs more than 24,000 in the region and the shipbuilder plans to hire about 1,000 more workers — including engineers, electricians, machinists and mechanics — this year. New employees will help replace retirees, though hiring also depends on the Navy's future shipbuilding plans, Miller added.

California woman grateful for welding company's act of kindness in repairing electric lift chair
    Lodi News-Sentinel
Dyanna Wedgwood was without her electric lift chair once before when it broke. She went four hours without the potential lifeline before a friend went to Sacramento and bought the Galt woman a new one. When it suddenly broke again recently, she opened the phone book. Wedgwood, who is disabled and relies on the chair to lift her into a standing position because her knees are weak, remembered there was a welding company located near her apartment, so she gave Royer Welding and Maintenance a call.

    From welding to wine
    Austin Daily Herald
John Tapager still remembers the conversation seven years ago. He was in a bar — on his way to Las Vegas with his brother and brother-in-law — where they struck up a conversation with a woman who owned an eyewear shop. She had it set up like a boutique, Tapager recalls, so she always looked for different ways to display her eye glasses. As they sat there talking, the woman asked if Tapager, who at the time created and sold steel cat sculptures and other novelty items to moderate success, could design something for her. About a month later, he put something together. As he looked at it, however, he noticed a couple of wine glasses sitting out, and wondered if his frame would hold them. Then he wondered if the center piece would hold a wine bottle.

New Hampshire colleges look to build a welding workforce
    SeacoastOnline.com
Great Bay Community College and the Seacoast School of Technology have come together to create an adult welding certification program. Officials say the program will fill a growing void in the country's workforce for trained welders. "I've been in the field my whole life and now I'm training people," said SST welding teacher Jonathan Theberge. "I see the demand; I see the need for skilled welders." SST Principal Margaret Callahan said that — according to the American Welding Society — there are 600,000 welding jobs in the U.S., however, "people are not trained for and don't have the skills to fill them."

TCAT-Newbern welding student wins contest, equipment for school
    State Gazette
Members of the Tennessee College of Applied Technology Newbern's welding program participated in a contest sponsored by the Victor Technologies Company. The contest was for first- and second-year welding students and it required the students to write an essay describing how cutting and welding has shaped their character, while also empowering them as technical professionals. The Victor Company's goal was to see how students' feel that their technical skills will help them be innovators in the future of the welding profession. Though thousands of entries were received, there were only three winners possible nationwide.

Teaching welding and technology education, he is bonding an interest in learning with hands–on techniques, which has electrified students' creativity in this classroom. Brian Gersich, the principal at the Mankato (Minn.) West High School, says, "He works really hard to make sure that things are relevant for his students. He wants to make sure that he's using current technology and he really has given our students an experience that they're going to use."

    Tweco releases 3-in-1 welder
    Grainews
Tweco, a division of Victor Technologies, thinks it has the ideal solution for those who can't justify the expense of buying three different welders. Tweco's new Fabricator line of welders put MIG, TIG and stick capability into one affordable machine. The Fabricator line includes four different models with varying outputs. Tom Wermert, Tweco's brand manager, thinks the Fabricator 211i model, which is rated at 210 amps, best suits the needs of most farm workshops. "For a farmer, to do everything he wants to do, the 211i would be the ideal machine for his shop," he says. "With the 211i, he can weld up to 3/8-inch thick steel on a single pass. He can weld the thicker materials he comes across, like hitches and things of that nature."
