Bob Adelmann: US manufacturing making headway
The New American    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The numbers posted at Investors Business Daily by John Merline were impressive: U.S. manufacturing profits last year exceeded $600 billion, almost tripling since the bottom of the recession, while jobs in manufacturing have increased by 400,000 in the past two years. Unemployment in manufacturing has been below the national average for eight straight months, and the industry itself has been growing at three times the rate of the overall economy. More jobs. Higher profits. Lower unemployment. Faster growth. All good. Economist Mark Perry is on board with the new robust sector: "By all relevant measures of economic performance ... American manufacturing remains the shining star of the U.S. economy." And this is taking place right under the noses of politicians who are decrying the perceived woes in manufacturing. More

PwC offers a checklist for supply chains. More

Wisconsin economy continues moderate expansion
PR Newswire via MarketWatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Wisconsin economy is expanding at a moderate pace, as manufacturing continues to grind out a modest recovery, while agriculture output is on pace for another solid year, according to the State Monitor report released by BMO Capital Markets Economics. The business sector remains firmly in expansion territory. Harbingers of success: New law eases student access to graduation, credentialing rates
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When high school students think about prospective careers, they usually look at salaries, typical workdays and possible employers. Such things are important, of course. But to realize their dreams, first many must earn a degree or certificate and possibly pass a credentialing exam. Often, their chances of success in those arenas is less well-known when they select a school to prepare them for their careers. Numbers on graduation rates and passage rates on credentialing exams are mostly — though not entirely — accessible, although researching them isn't necessarily easy. A federal law that took effect last summer makes some information easier to access. More

Event welds women to skill
The World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Faces behind welding masks are gradually becoming those of women. New Faces of Welding, at Southwestern Oregon Community College, sought to encourage more girls to enter the traditionally male-dominated field. It was the third such event that highlighted various non-traditional fields held at the college. About 50 girls from Coos and Curry County schools attended the event that highlighted the field and allowed them to ask questions to professionals. Then they tried welding for real as they put together a jewelry holder. More
