David J. Landon Elected 2015 President and Chair of the Board of the American Welding Society
AWS
David J. Landon has been named as the 2015 president and chair of the board of the 70,000 member American Welding Society (AWS). Landon has been an active member of the Society for over 30 years and previously served as vice president of AWS from 2012-2014. Landon has also been a contributing member to many technical committees and won several awards from the Society including the District 16 Dalton E. Hamilton Memorial Certified Welding Inspector of the Year award and numerous meritorious awards.

The conference will include a technical program featuring presentations on additive manufacturing, automation, new filler materials and NDT. Presenters will discuss a newly developed welding electrode that upon cooling does not shrink which will help reduce distortion effects and perhaps negate the need for weld toe peening required for fatigue life extension. The latest in aluminum welding from a true expert in the field will be presented. Several presenters will highlight new methods of automating the welding operations in shipyards. The recently introduced NDT method of computed RT will be discussed as well as the use of artificial intelligence as applied to NDT. As keynote speaker, Johnnie DeLoach the Head of the Materials Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division will kick off the conference.

The welding program has been around at Rhea County High School for over 20 years, according to RCHS Assistant Principal Shelia Massengill, but has recently seen a large surge of attention and interest the past few years. The school recently partnered up with Heatec Inc. of Chattanooga. Heatec makes heaters, tanks and related products for a wide variety of industries.

Report: US millennials getting schooled in skills

Educational attainment among U.S. millennials has been on the rise. More students than ever are graduating from high school, and the percentage of young people with a college education has been inching up over the last few years. But those on track to make up almost half of the workforce might not have the necessary skills to compete internationally, according to a new report.

Mobile welding labs proposed in northwest Minnesota

Students in 29 northwest Minnesota school districts would have access to mobile manufacturing training facilities under a proposal by state Sen. LeRoy Stumpf, D-Plummer. Stumpf said his bill seeking $350,000 is an effort to expose students to manufacturing jobs.

Industrial production rebounds in January
IndustryWeek
After a dip in December, U.S. industry increased its output by 0.2 percent in January, the Federal Reserve reported today. Industrial production had fallen by 0.3 percent in December. Manufacturing output also rose 0.2 percent in January, the bank announced, with durable goods output advancing 0.4 percent and nondurable goods unchanged. Production increases of more than 1 percent were recorded by the primary metals and computer and electronic products sectors.

Lunchtime welding at a California high school

Barstow High School welding teacher Jason Avila doesn’t mind spending extra time with his students. "I wish I had this when I was growing up," he said, standing inside his classroom. Avila is spending the extra time because seven of his students decided to form a welding club. Many of the students skip their lunch hour to spend extra time working on personal projects or a big project that might make a difference.

Ashford (Alabama) High School students fire up welding skills in dual-enrollment program

To some kids, it’s playing with fire to others it's a work of art. Students of Ashford (Alabama) High School are learning basic skills of welding. Ashford's welding program is made possible with Wallace Community College and local businesss of the metal and steel industry. Director Glen Maloy says it's been a slow start but the kids enjoy it.

Butte County (California) Juvenile Hall welding program ignites hope for offenders, builds well-drilling rigs for Africa

Officials say a brighter future for young offenders is shaping up at Butte County, California, Juvenile Hall after the launch of a welding class that is helping build water well-drilling rigs for Africa. Juvenile Hall started the welding program in September after years of planning, said Wayne Barley, chief deputy probation officer with the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Idaho welding competition brings the heat

When the orange curtains illuminated with the hot light of the welders, the young faces behind the masks were cool, calm and collected. Teams in Idaho from Kootenai Technical Education Campus, Sandpoint High School and Lakeland High School participated in the third annual high school SkillsUSA regional welding competition Feb. 20, using their welding education to prove who was hot stuff while handling the hot stuff.

Arlington (Nebraska) High School to reintroduce welding program

A renewed interest in welding has prompted administrators to reintroduce the program into the Arlington (Nebraska) High School curriculum. "Welding — it’s a great profession," Principal Andrew Farber said. "It can be a very lucrative and secure profession and we would like to offer our kids exposure to that."

February is the month for National Career Technology and Agricultural Education awareness. The CTAE Departments at Colquitt County High School, C.A. Gray Jr. High and Williams Middle School use this opportunity to showcase their curriculum and community involvement, according to a press release from the CTAE program. An integral part of each CTAE program area curriculum is the student organizations where they develop leadership skills and teamwork. During this month, the student organizations participate in various local and state competitions and community services.
