Potential sequester will have big effect on manufacturing, private sector
Carroll County Times
An October study estimates manufacturing will be hit the hardest in the private sector if Congress does not pass a sequester deal. The study found manufacturing will experience the largest job losses, due to the large number of manufacturing companies that supply goods such as defense equipment and aerospace vehicles to the Department of Defense. For contractors, it will lead to more diversified portfolios and less dependence on the federal government.

Register today for the Weld Cracking Conference in Las Vegas
AWS
Much to their chagrin, most welding engineers have witnessed a crack or two or even more in the welds fabricated within their plants. That is no fun. Most of these cracks can be prevented from taking place. All it takes is more practical knowledge. Were the cracks caused by hydrogen diffusion, residual stress, some mix-up in heat treating, misuse of electrodes in dissimilar metal welds, or some unexplained problem with the heat-affected zone? To find out what it takes to eliminate weld cracks, go out of your way to make plans to attend a new and different AWS Conference on Weld Cracking which will be held on March 26-27, in Las Vegas. The experts will be there, armed with solutions to many of your problems.

Sign of a comeback: US carmakers are hiring
The New York Times
A few years ago, American automakers cut tens of thousands of jobs and shut dozens of factories simply to survive. Now steadily rising auto sales and two-tier wage concessions from labor have spurred a wave of new manufacturing investments and hiring by the three Detroit automakers in the United States. The latest development occurred when Ford said it was adding 450 jobs and expanding what had been a beleaguered engine plant in Ohio to feed the growing demand for more fuel-efficient cars and SUVs in the American market.

Is China the world's next rust belt?
strategy+business
According to a growing number of media and analyst reports, China's days as the world's largest manufacturing nation are already numbered — only two years after ending the United States' 110-year reign. Labor costs are on the rise, the demographic dividend is dissipating, and rising oil prices are making long-distance transportation costs to China's major export markets in the U.S. and Europe unsustainable. At the same time, U.S. firms are developing a new respect for the art of manufacturing.

Factories in US probably expanded on capital spending
Bloomberg
Manufacturing in the U.S. probably expanded for a third month in February as the global economy stabilized and businesses invested more in new equipment, economists said. The healing in some overseas markets and the need for U.S. businesses to replenish their capital stock are helping underpin manufacturing, which stumbled in the second half of 2012.

This augmented reality welding mask shows you how sloppy your welds really are
BoingBoing.net
The creators of the MannVis augmented reality welding helmet have come up with a set of complex algorithms which allow real-time processing of HDR videos at 120 frames per second — in stereoscopic 3D, no less. The process creates an effective contrast ratio of 100,000,000:1 which is far beyond natural human capability. This incredible contrast ratio is used in an augmented reality view to show the welder inhuman detail as they weld.

Exotic, useful metals are about to become cheap and plentiful
The Economist
Aluminum was once more costly than gold. How times change. And in aluminum's case, they changed because, in the late 1880s, Charles Hall and Paul Héroult worked out how to separate the stuff from its oxide using electricity rather than chemical reducing agents. Now, the founders of Metalysis, a small British firm, hope to do much the same with tantalum, titanium and a host of other recherché and expensive metallic elements including neodymium, tungsten and vanadium.
