In Kentucky, manufacturers partner to bridge the skills gap
Brookings Institution
When General Electric announced plans to ramp up production at its Louisville Appliances & Lighting plant several years ago, the company and its suppliers faced a significant barrier: finding enough skilled workers to staff their plants and factories Securing skilled labor is a familiar challenge for employers. Although debate continues over the size and nature of a national skills gap, in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky — a 22-county area stretching from Louisville to Lexington — the problem was particularly acute.

AWS 9th Shipbuilding Conference
AWS
Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel
April 7-8, 2015
Virginia Beach, VA

The conference will include a technical program featuring presentations on additive manufacturing, automation, new filler materials and NDT. Presenters will discuss a newly developed welding electrode that upon cooling does not shrink which will help reduce distortion effects and perhaps negate the need for weld toe peening required for fatigue life extension. The latest in aluminum welding from a true expert in the field will be presented. Several presenters will highlight new methods of automating the welding operations in shipyards. The recently introduced NDT method of computed RT will be discussed as well as the use of artificial intelligence as applied to NDT. As keynote speaker, Johnnie DeLoach the Head of the Materials Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division will kick off the conference.

Checking your car's 4,000 welds is serious business and scientists just made it easier
Department of Energy
The average car is held together by more than 4,000 welds. To ensure these welds are solid and safe, manufacturers perform what’s known as a "pry-check," a process that literally means tearing apart samples of welded pieces — about one per shift, on average. But this process is destructive and expensive, resulting in wasted materials and labor. A new infrared imaging technology from Oak Ridge National Laboratory promises to make this process cheaper, quicker and more reliable.

Electric Boat celebrates keel-laying in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, for the Colorado
The Day
A thousand more people than usual watched John Alves do his job on March 7. Sporting a crisp suit, Alves stepped into coveralls and welding leather, and, with shaky hands from the cold, welded a small but significant plate of steel that will be a permanent part of the Navy’s newest submarine. Though it only lasted a few minutes, it was the biggest moment of the X-ray welder’s life, he would later say. The moment was made more enjoyable for Alves because as he welded, Electric Boat’s a cappella group The Subtones sang one of his favorite songs by one of his favorite country singers, John Denver, whose CD he has in his car.

High-precision radar for the steel industry
Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft via Phys.org
Steel is the most important material in vehicle and machinery construction. Large quantities of offcuts and scraps are left over from rolling and milling crude steel into strip steel. New radar from Fraunhofer researchers measures the width of the strip during fabrication to an accuracy of micrometers and helps to minimize scrap.

How corporate America can close the skills gap
Fortune
The erosion of the skills base of the American workforce, especially for middle-skills jobs (generally defined as those requiring education or training beyond a high-school diploma but less than a four-year degree), is a major threat to U.S. competitiveness. Employers across sectors and geographies have difficulty finding workers with relevant skills; aspiring workers lack insight into which skills are in demand and access to the resources to develop their talents fully. What is to be done about this chronic weakness? To begin, employers need to take the lead.
