In bipartisan vote, House jobs bill overwhelmingly passes
NBC News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a rare act of bipartisanship on Capitol Hill, the House has overwhelmingly passed the JOBS Act, 390-23, a package of six bills dedicated to helping small businesses get access to capital and create jobs. The package had been spearheaded by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., and had the blessing of the White House's Office of Management and Budget. The package of bills works to cut through some of the bureaucratic red tape involved in small business start-ups, such as allowing smaller companies to go public sooner, and getting rid of regulations that involve raising business capital. Of the six bills in the package, four had already passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in the House, but had yet to be brought up for a vote in the Senate. More

SoftwareAdvice via Economy In Crisis    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recent Deloitte report estimated that as many as 600,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs are unfilled. Why? There's a skills mismatch in the manufacturing industry. Much of the recent coverage around the manufacturing skills gap has focused on its root causes, which are by now familiar: Baby boomers are retiring, shop floor automation is increasing the technical skills required in manufacturing jobs, and youth are disinterested in pursuing a manufacturing career. Three ways to overcome the skills deficit are explored. More

Wisconsin technical college revamps welding program in response to need
WEAU-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to skilled manufacturing jobs, the picture looks bright in Eau Claire, Wis. Eighteen months ago, a shortage of welders sparked a larger conversation between Chippewa Valley Technical College and local manufacturing companies, about what the companies were looking for in new hires. "We talked to a lot of different companies about what they needed and we found out three different categories were needed; one was advanced welding technical specialties such as robotics welding," said Mark Hendrickson CVTC's dean of manufacturing. So the technical school re-tooled its welding and fabrication program, creating a two-year program in a brand new facility that opened at the beginning of this year. More
