India may become 5th-largest manufacturing nation

India may become the fifth-largest manufacturing nation — from ninth position at present — if the country is able to increase the share of manufacturing in GDP to 25 percent, a new report said. The National Manufacturing Policy envisages that India's manufacturing sector should increase its share of GDP from 15 percent at present to 25 percent by 2022, in line with global peers.

Washington governor makes 1st weld on state's 2nd 144-car ferry

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee officially kicked off the construction of the state's newest 144-car ferry, by making the first weld on the vessel at Vigor Industrial's Seattle shipyard. Earlier in the week, U.S. Fab, the Vigor company building the ferries, hit a major project milestone on the first vessel when the company successfully transferred the 1,110-ton superstructure onto the hull.

Manufacturing makes bigger impact on Oregon's economic output than any other state
The Oregonian
The economic impact of manufacturing in Oregon outweighs any other state, a recent study shows. Manufacturers produced more than one-quarter of Oregon's gross state product — 28.7 percent, to be exact — in 2011. Just two other states, Louisiana and Indiana, had contributions from manufacturing that topped 20 percent.

After voters turned down a millage request in 2003, Jackson Community College dropped its skilled trades training program, leaving area manufacturers without a key source of future talent. So, they decided to do some DIY job training. Heat is on for welders

For a group of Washington high school students, the heat of competition came from 5,000-degree cutting torches slicing through steel plates. Eleven students from Lakeland High School's welding program took part in a timed exercise to determine which three will represent the school at a statewide competition in Boise, Idaho, in April.
