    Welders, America needs you
    Bloomberg Businessweek
For the better part of the past 30 years, welding was seen as a dead-end job. When the manufacturing sector began contracting in the 1980s, so did the demand for people who worked with metal. In 1988, there were 570,000 welders in the U.S., according to data kept by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. By 2012, there were fewer than 360,000. But manufacturing has grown faster than the rest of the U.S. economy since the recession ended in June 2009. For the first time since the early 1960s, manufacturers have added jobs four years in a row. Couple that with the oil and gas boom and the thousands of miles of new pipeline being built, and the demand for skilled welders has risen sharply.

To fill skills gap in US, schools look abroad
    NPR
One big challenge in the U.S. economy is the skills gap. Employers are finding workers just don't have the skills to get the job done. The White House has focused on the problem. At a manufacturing plant this year President Obama said the United States has to improve job training programs and community colleges and trade schools are trying. Susanna Capelouto reports on why Europe might have some tips.

US manufacturing is coming back — Thank shale
    CNBC
The U.S. shale boom is beginning to ripple outward to American cities. The shale mining industry's rising demand for materials and equipment along with the abundance of cheap fuel are fueling a modest renaissance in American manufacturing, according to a report prepared by IHS Global insight for the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The shale extraction industry is itself driving growth through its hunger for steel pipeline, extraction machinery and other materials needed at domestic shale deposits, including the Bakken in North Dakota and the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania.

    Sparking interest in welding
    The Seattle Times
Rusty Oliver teaches a Welding 101 class at All Metal Arts in the 7 Point Studios building on Dearborn Street in Seattle. "In the three years I've been doing this, I've handed out one Band-Aid," said Oliver, who has many different types of classes friendly to beginners and enthusiasts. Welding 101 introduces novices to MIG and TIG welding equipment, and allows beginners to practice on scrap metal. Oliver says that getting into metalworking changes one's perspective that things in life are disposable. "If you have something that's made out of steel, you can repair it or fix it indefinitely. So, it gives you a much more intimate relationship with the things in your life."

Washington state food, employment program boosts breadwinning potential
Skagit Valley Herald via Yakima Herald-Republic
Despite the fact that he had a fairly well-paying job in Bellingham, Wash., when he got out of prison, welder Kevin Riley said he wouldn’t be where he is today without a little help. For him, that help came from Skagit Valley College’s Workforce Training and the statewide program called Basic Food Employment and Training. The BFET program is offered through the state Department of Agriculture and provides financial support to residents who qualify for other assistance programs, like food stamps. The BFET program exists at community colleges across the state to provide job and skills training.

    Weld like a girl
    The World

Thirty high school girls from North Bend, Marshfield, Bandon, Pacific and Gold Beach learned how to use plasma cutters, grinders, MIG welds and more in Southwestern Oregon Community College’s welding shop March 21. Ponytails hidden under red kerchiefs with white polka dots bobbed around the shop as sparks flew by the girls’ soot-smudged faces.

It all makes 'cents' for Vermont sculptor
    Manchester Journal via Bennington Banner
American coins, concrete molds and metal joists don't generally conjure up an image of fine art with a functional component. But that is exactly what makes up the signature coin furniture of Vermont-based sculptor Johnny Swing. His work can be seen everywhere from the Four Seasons in New York City to the Garden Restaurant in Londonderry, Vt. Swing was first attracted to art as a young child, drawing and painting, but he was also fascinated by the construction of objects.

Report: Gas boom could bring 1,000 manufacturing jobs to Scranton, Pa., area
    The Scranton Times-Tribune
A surge in natural gas production could lead to a modest increase in manufacturing jobs in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pa., metro area, according to a report by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The report, released March 20, forecasts a net gain of 994 manufacturing jobs in the region between 2012 and 2020. The report credits a nationwide demand for pipelines and machinery to produce and transport oil and natural gas, coupled with cheap natural gas as a fuel and chemical feedstock, for reigniting American manufacturing.
