Welcome to the 'jobless' US manufacturing boom
The Fiscal Times
VideoBrief Recently, Chris Budnick, the CEO of Vanguard Plastics in Southington, Conn., needed a new employee for his 30-person factory to help with the 24-hour schedule. He could have done what managers and CEOs have done for decades: post a job ad, sort through hundreds of resumes, interview dozens of potential candidates, conduct second or third interviews and pay for background checks, then offer a wage of $9-$15 an hour and health benefits, a profit-sharing program and more. Instead, Budnick hired someone else — or something else. His name is Baxter, a humanoid robot from Rethink Robotics.

Paint booth pumps up business for Custom Welding & Metal Fabricating
St Cloud Times
Until now, Carmie Mick's family business — Custom Welding & Metal Fabricating — was primarily known for what's in it's name. Since her father launched his welding operation in 1968, the company has grown. It eventually added metal rolling, CNC plate cutting and bending processes and employs about two dozen people out of a five-acre complex. Now, Mick and her brothers added a paint booth so they could take projects from idea to completion all on site.

Why the 2000s were a lost decade for American manufacturing
IndustryWeek
The real reason the U.S. lost 5.7 million manufacturing jobs in the last decade was due to the decline in manufacturing output, which in turn was caused by U.S. manufacturing losing out in global competition. In response to these statistics, official Washington has a ready-made excuse: these job losses are a sign of strength, not weakness, as they simply reflect superior manufacturing productivity performance.
