    Atlas Machine has what it believes to be the biggest welder in North America

    Atlas Machine and Supply Inc., a Louisville, Ky.-based engineering and manufacturing company, has a custom-built, large-capacity welding machine that officials believe is the largest of its type in North America. The machinery is the signature piece of what Atlas has dubbed its Welding Solutions Center. The center, located at Atlas’ headquarters on Global Drive in Jefferson Riverport International, is expected to significantly expand the company’s ability to handle larger and more complicated work generated by the steel, paper and aluminum industries, according to a news release.

    Problem for American industry: A good welder is hard to find

    The nation's 390,000-odd welders are becoming policy pin-ups, sparking debate on issues ranging from labor market dynamics to the health of the military-industrial base. The pay’s not bad, either. Kansas City Fed chief Esther George joined the throng March 28, singling out the sector as one reason why she felt there was upward pressure on wages, which was in turn stoking upward pressure on inflation.

    Milwaukee's Bradley Tech welding lab to expand with $250,000 Bucyrus Foundation gift
    Milwaukee Business Journal
    The Bucyrus Foundation, a donor-advised fund at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, is donating $250,000 to the Bradley Technology and Trade School Foundation to expand its welding lab, which will be named the Bucyrus Foundation Welding Lab. Susan Stein, philanthropic counsel at Bradley Technology and Trade School Foundation Inc., said the money would be used to expand the existing welding lab from four welding stations to eight and would help pay the operating expenses for the welding program for the next two school years.

    Oklahoma welding and fabrication business expands

    Lockhart Welding and Fabrication is expanding, sort of. The Sallisaw, Okla., welding and fabricating business is expanding its current facility on 2701 N. Maple Ave. to add more room. Owner David Lockhart said the addition will take about six to seven weeks to complete and move in, and will expand the overall building to 11,500 square feet.

    Elektron releases fully automatic spot-welding system

    Elektron recently announced that it has released the TrueAutoMode, a fully automatic spot welding system that the company says is the first of its kind in the industry. The TrueAutoMode automates the welding process to provide "perfect, OEM-approved spot welds every time," according to an Elektron release.

    Virtual welding comes to Colorado community college

    When community college students in southwest Colorado lay down their first line of molten metal, it may not be with a live torch next semester. For the first time at Southwest Colorado Community College, students will have the opportunity to practice with a virtual welder, allowing them to see the metal bonds forming through a computerized hood without bodily risk and without metal waste.

    AGCO sponsors welding in Minnesota
    Fairmont Sentinel
    Fairmont (Minn.) Area Schools will offer a pair of summer school classes this year. A welding academy will run for 15 days in June, while work on an FFA garden will continue throughout the summer. Earlier this month, Superintendent Joe Brown sent a letter to area businesses with a request for financial aid to sponsor a summer welding program for Martin County students. AGCO in Jackson responded with a pledge to donate the entire $6,000 to pay for staff and materials.

    Unit 40 helps create welding program at southern Illinois high school

    The future looks bright for area workers following the creation of a new partnership that includes Effingham (Ill.) High School. Effingham High School Principal Jason Fox recently announced the creation of an expanded welding program at the school. Fox and Superintendent Mark Doan heard from approximately 25 local manufacturers about the need for skilled workers.
