Be prepared: 5 potential welding safety hazards to avoid
    Occupational Health & Safety
Safety is a critical consideration for any welding project. Arc welding is a safe occupation when proper precautions are taken, but if safety measures are ignored, welders face an array of hazards that can be potentially dangerous, including electric shock, fumes and gases, fire, explosions, and more. To help keep welders safe, organizations such as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and OSHA offer safety guidelines to help control, minimize, or to help employers and workers avoid welding hazards.

Is there really a skills gap?
    Inc.
Business owners everywhere, it seems, complain they can’t find good help these days. It’s a staple of conversation from talk radio to chats over the donuts and coffee at Chamber of Commerce meetings. That concern is reflected in numerous recent surveys of businesses — big and small. Almost 4 in 10 U.S. employers told Manpower, a staffing company, that they were having difficulty filling jobs. The feeling is particularly acute at small and midsize companies. In a U.S. Chamber of Commerce study, 53 percent of leaders at smaller businesses said they faced a “very or fairly major challenge in recruiting nonmanagerial employees.”

Aerospace manufacturing takes off in South
    USA Today
The South is home to auto giants Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Nissan Motor Co. It is increasingly attracting some of the biggest names in aviation, including Boeing Co. in South Carolina, Airbus in Alabama, Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. in Georgia and GE Aviation in North Carolina. Aerospace companies are taking a cue from the auto industry and moving their manufacturing operations to Southern states. The region's lower costs, generous state incentive packages and right-to-work laws that make it hard for unions to organize are motivating these companies to choose the South.

Not many 9-year-old girls can say they’ve done welding in a manufacturing setting, but Lauren Greenman can add that to her future resume. The third-grader from Keicher Elementary School in Michigan Center, Mich., welded pieces of metal at the Jackson Area Career Center as part of a program focused on developing young girls’ confidence and skills in science, technology, engineering and math — or STEM. “All three of my uncles are welders,” Lauren said. “It was really cool and fun.”

Manufacturing employment dropped by 1,000 in March; revisions add 15,000 to January and February
    Shopfloor
Manufacturing employment dropped by 1,000 in March, its first monthly decline in eight months. While this was disappointing, the good news was that manufacturers added 15,000 workers more than previously estimated in January and February, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics revisions. Since August, the manufacturing sector has averaged 12,125 additional workers each month, a sign that the rebound that we have seen since the beginning of the third quarter has resulted in a pickup in hiring. Since the end of 2009, manufacturers have added 602,000 employees, or 7.3 percent of the 8.2 million workers created during that time.

With so many unemployed, why are 7,400 manufacturing jobs open in Northeast Ohio?
    The Plain Dealer
For all the talk about the lack of jobs in Northeast Ohio, there are 7,400 open manufacturing jobs in the region. If that seems jarring, consider this: The number is so high because many workers don't have the skills that area employers need, Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President and CEO Sandra Pianalto said April 2. "That has to change," Pianalto told a group of about 150 who attended the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership regional meeting at the University of Akron.

Applying for a welding job at the Richmond shipyard during World War II, Agnes Moore dressed in her best black suit, with matching kid gloves, patent leather shoes and a hat with a veil. She declined an office job. "I want to be a welder," she said, and soon she was wearing leather overalls, a leather jacket, metal-toe boots and a bandanna to hold back her hair. Moore, 94, of Walnut Creek, Calif., along with five other Bay Area women who were among the first to break the gender barrier in the American workplace, were recently honored by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and six other members of the Bay Area delegation at Pelosi's Capitol office, following breakfast with Vice President Joe Biden and a meeting with President Obama.

Female welders needed to help forge a future in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley
    The Morning Call
As music by Glenn Miller softly played in the background — punctuated by the crackle, snap and zip of heavy equipment — Sam Kincaid practiced some welding techniques at Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School. Kincaid, dressed head to toe in full protective gear, isn't your typical welding student. She is one of five female students in Vincent Facchiano's welding technology class at the vo-tech. "My brother is a welder, so that's how I got interested in it," said Kincaid, 17, of Bethlehem. She is pursuing a career in a field that's overwhelmingly made up of men. In fact, only 2 percent of welders are female, according to the American Welding Society.
