These 5 manufacturing trends are no joke
    IndustryWeek
For as many fits and starts as they have suffered over the years, manufacturers can be forgiven for not participating in the annual prankfest known as April Fool’s Day. Recent results have left some in the sector understandably humorless. For example, while both the U.S. and Canada enjoyed manufacturing growth in March, Canadian input costs rose to their highest levels in nearly three years due to a weaker currency. Smaller U.S. factories are taking a cautious approach in response to the uncertainty.

Welding jobs in demand in Pennsylvania's Mon Valley
    TribLIVE
Brownsville Marine Products hosted a job fair recently, recruiting potential new welders. “We sent a bunch of secondary students who are about to graduate, and they hired every person we sent there,” said Vernon Stouffer, work-based learning coordinator and math teacher at the Mon Valley Career and Technology Center in Speers, Pa. Such is the need for welders that even employers are training prospective employees. Brownsville Marine Products did welding testing at the job fair. Many of the students sent by the vocational technical school had some welding experience.

Schools2Skills hooks more future manufacturing workers
    Milwaukee Business Journal
Alex Clementi, a junior at Kettle Moraine High School in Wisconsin, thought factories were loud, cluttered and smelly before he went on the Waukesha County Business Alliance's Schools2Skills tour of three manufacturing facilities April 10. After visiting Bruno Independent Living Aids Inc., an Oconomowoc company that makes assisted living devices like chair and stair lifts, he thinks differently about factories and wants to be a welder because he likes the idea of being able to work with his hands and be challenged by his job.

Divers weld new life into Coast Guard cutter
    WDIO-TV
Divers took a dip in the icy Duluth (Minn.) Harbor one recent afternoon to make rudder repairs to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Morro Bay. It's just another day at the office, but in a wetsuit for James Morris and his diving crew. He said it is tough diving into an icy harbor. “Fighting through, a lot of times, in the dark with limited visibility and being cold or every sense you have is on overload because you're not in your original environment,” Morris said.

Penn Commercial breaks ground on new welding lab
    Observer-Reporter
With the hoisting of 11 shovels, Penn Commercial Business and Technical School sealed the deal on the start of its welding lab. “The welding trade is one of many things the oil and gas industry needs,” state Sen. Tim Solobay said April 10, minutes before the ceremonial groundbreaking for the facility in South Strabane Township, Pa. Welding has made a big comeback in the region, thanks partly to the oil and gas boom, and Penn Commercial has joined the educational fray.

Lamar (Colo.) CC's construction trades building expands to accommodate student growth
    The Prowers Journal
Lamar (Colo.) Community College’s Construction Technology Program has continued to expand in recent years. With traditional and nontraditional students, and men and women, those who have a career and those who are improving skills for their current career have enrolled in the program. As the program continued to add students, the construction trades building at the school lacked capacity to accommodate the increased number of students in the welding program, and upgrades were needed to the electrical infrastructure, as well as the ventilation in order to meet the demands of the growing program.
