Is there a manufacturing renaissance or not?
IndustryWeek
The growth in manufacturing has prompted some to proclaim a manufacturing renaissance in the United States. President Barack Obama then fanned hopes in his 2012 State of the Union speech when he called manufacturing the foundation of an economy built to last. Is the renaissance actually underway? On March 22, Jan Hatzius, an economist with Goldman Sachs, said the evidence for a manufacturing renaissance was "scant so far."

INDUSTRY NEWS

Made in the USA
TIME (subscription)
On the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, there's a bright red cellphone tower that delivers coverage to thousands of the city's 3 million people. Inside the tower sit batteries with a high-tech design and a simple purpose: to provide backup power to keep calls connected even when the electrical grid goes down. The surprising thing is where these batteries are made. Not China, Japan or one of the other big Asian manufacturing powers. Instead they come from a plant in Schenectady, N.Y., a Rust Belt city once seen as a relic of an earlier industrial age.

Unemployment benefits should encourage geographic mobility
The Washington Post (commentary)
Americans have always been willing to move to look for better economic opportunities, and this willingness to relocate is a big factor in U.S. prosperity. Yet while everyone is free to move to look for a better life, not everyone takes advantage of the opportunity to the same degree. Some overdue changes in unemployment insurance could improve the mobility of less-educated Americans, narrow their earning gap with better-educated workers, ease unemployment and reduce income inequality.

American manufacturing: Growing — and changing for the better
MSNBC
Despite what was considered a disappointing March jobs report with only 88,000 jobs added, there were a couple of bright spots. One was the manufacturing sector, which added 50,000 jobs over the last three years. "What is interesting about the manufacturing renaissance this time around, it is not your grandfather's manufacturing or your father's manufacturing," Rana Faroohar said.

GM, Ford to collaborate on new transmissions
The Associated Press via Manufacturing.net
General Motors and Ford are putting aside their longstanding rivalry to work together to develop a new generation of fuel-efficient automatic transmissions. The companies said that their engineers will jointly design nine- and 10-speed transmissions that will go into many of their new cars and trucks. When transmissions have more gears, engines don't have to work as hard. That saves fuel. As long as the shifting is smooth, most customers don't give much thought to their transmissions.

Garages becoming lavish man toy palaces
The Wall Street Journal
Once seen as a catchall space to store bicycles, trash cans and lawn tools, garages are being rediscovered as the ideal place — who knew? — to park cars. Increasingly, many of these spaces are also becoming more lavish — loaded with high-end finishes and man toys, such as flat-screen TVs, underground car lifts and welding equipment.
