Why this Chicago manufacturer is hiring 300 in Gary, Indiana
Crain's Chicago Business
Edsal Manufacturing, a Chicago-based firm that makes a wide-range of shelving products, is opening a facility in Gary where it will hire 300 people. Edsal decided to open a new operation in the Indiana town because it is close to the company's operations in Chicago, according to CEO Bruce Saltzberg. He also cited the Hoosier state's right-to-work law, which makes it more difficult for unions to organize and keep members, as well as a state minimum wage that stands at $7.25 per hour, the federal minimum.

Vision-based system ensures precise pipe welding
Vision Systems Design
First patented in 1935, the technique of Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) is still widely used in heavy industry because it enables high deposition rates and gives good quality results in welding thick material. For example, it is well-suited to the longitudinal and circumferential welds required in the manufacture of large cylindrical structures. One of the more recent uses of the SAW welding technique has been in the manufacture of the thick tubes known as monopiles for the offshore wind industry.
