Labor shortage threatens to bust the shale boom
    Bloomberg Businessweek
How high is demand for welders to work in the shale boom on the U.S. Gulf Coast? So high that "you can take every citizen in the region of Lake Charles, La., between the ages of 5 and 85 and teach them all how to weld and you’re not going to have enough welders," said Peter Huntsman, chief executive officer of chemical-maker Huntsman Corp. So high that San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas, offers a four-hour welding class in the middle of the night. So high that local employers say they're worried there won’t be adequate supply of workers of all kinds.

US industrial output rises in March, manufacturing gains
    Reuters
U.S. manufacturing output rose for a second straight month in March in a sign of recovery from a long winter that had put a damper on activity. Factory production increased 0.5 percent in March, according to data from the Federal Reserve on April 16. Overall industrial production was up 0.7 percent, beating analysts' expectations. February's industrial production was revised up to a gain of 1.2 percent from a previously reported 0.6 percent rise, due to stronger gains for durable goods manufacturing and for mining, the Fed said.

    ClassNK approves fillet welding consumable
    MarineLink.com
Classification society ClassNK announced that it has granted type approval for the new MX-200F welding consumable, developed by Kobe Steel Co. Ltd. to improve welding efficiency and coating quality in commercial vessels. Until now, shipbuilders using conventional fillet welding consumables had to make two welding passes for the required weld leg lengths of around 8 mm or above. As the IACS Common Structural Rules require the use of 8 mm leg lengths in some structural members, this has meant that the relevant welding time for oil tanker and bulk carrier new buildings has virtually doubled.
