15 months: Sintel goes from near closure to award-winning welding center

Sintel has gone from having such poor quality steel-fabricated parts for Caterpillar that the West Michigan company was about to lose 70 percent of its business to being made a welding training center for the maker of giant excavators and trucks used in the mining and logging sectors. Sintel employees gathered with a quality assurance engineer from Caterpillar to receive a quality award for welding excellence from the Peoria, Ill.-based construction and mining equipment manufacturer with $65.8 billion in annual revenues.

Big spills coming from aging oil pipelines
The Wall Street Journal
Though the industry stopped making what is known as low-frequency, electric-resistance welded pipe by about 1970, it still accounts for more than a quarter of the 182,500 miles of liquid fuel pipelines across the U.S., according to federal data for 2011, the latest available. The accidents come as federal regulators are examining whether state-of-the-art inspection methods are capable of detecting flaws in these old pipe seams.

Boy Scouts gain welding badge as part of new partnership
