US manufacturers could be big winners from European crisis
Business Insider    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Among all the problems the European debt crisis pose to the global economy comes one possible benefit: A much-needed lift for American manufacturers. The growth in manufacturing, in turn, could help keep gross domestic product from plummeting to the recession levels being seen in Europe. U.S. companies are far less dependent on trade for GDP growth, so a downtrodden European consumer isn't as vital to American expansion. Earnings for large companies like 3M and United Technologies glistened in the first quarter, thanks in good part to bustling domestic business and some shield from the foreign turmoil. The U.S. government releases its initial GDP estimate for the first quarter Friday morning, with economists expecting a gain of about 2.6 percent. More

Iowa looks out of state for welders, other skilled workers
The Des Moines Register    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the first time, CEO Steve Fairbanks is considering using headhunters to bring workers from Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas and elsewhere to fill critically needed welding jobs at XL Specialized Trailers in Manchester, Iowa. "It's very expensive, and they will only guarantee that they'll stay on the job for 60 days," said Fairbanks, who has immediate needs for 25 welders, jobs that pay more than $50,000 annually with overtime. Vermeer, the Pella maker of farm and construction equipment, needs to fill nearly double that number of welding jobs as well as another 30 engineering jobs. More

16-year-old Chattanoogan makes suits of armor
Chattanoogan Times Free Press    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Some actors gird themselves in confidence and self-assurance to stave off stage fright. Spencer Morse prefers stainless steel — about 30 pounds of it. For an upcoming production of the Gilbert and Sullivan musical comedy "Princess Ida," Spencer, 16, tapped into his lifelong fascination with metalwork to make three sets of armor and a half-dozen swords for himself and his cast members. "I always like armor and medieval things like that," he said. "I was excited about wearing it, too, in the play. I wanted to make it look really cool. "If I hadn't made the armor, [the play] wouldn't have been as interesting." More

Businesses, groups add worker training to help fill positions
The Des Moines Register    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Throughout the recession, Eric Dregne heard both sides: Businesses struggled to find workers, and workers couldn't find jobs. "Last year, we made up our minds to figure this out," said Dregne, a vice president at the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, Iowa. The result was a 16-week pilot program that gave 20 unemployed and underemployed workers a shot at training to become machinists. It has worked so well that leaders want to triple the number of residents trained annually and add welding, information technology maintenance and other skills. More

Steel-aluminum foam sandwich weld holds promise for shipbuilding weight savings
MarineLog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a promising development for lightweight shipbuilding constructions, Germany's Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. and its partners in a joint project have laser welded a demonstrator for marine gear unit foundations made of steel and aluminum foam sandwich material. Large scale metal-foam sandwich materials are especially interesting for highly stressed ship structures such as foundations for machines, or for rudder structures, since weight reductions of up to 20 percent are possible. Helium shortage a rising concern for many industries
Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A nationwide helium shortage is doing more than deflating peoples' parties. The gas has a low boiling point, and is used by manufacturers as a cooling source. Liquid helium chills superconducting magnets like the kinds used in MRI scanners at hospitals. Helium is used in fiber optics, liquid crystal displays, quantum computing and other industrial applications. Distributors across the U.S. are on restricted allocations because of the shortage, including Superior Welding Supply Co. in Waterloo, which distributes helium to hundreds of businesses in the region. Make plans for AWS's Energy Welding Conference
AWS    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The demands for new and improved welding technology from the expanding energy markets are starting to pay off in the development of superior hybrid welding processes, new filler metals, and hosts of cladding procedures. Much of this new welding technology will be discussed at the AWS Energy II Welding Conference on June 12-13, in San Diego. The technologies are showing up in nuclear power plants, in coal-fired utilities, and especially in the new 1,700-mile pipelines designed to bring oil and natural gas to American markets. More

Students fired up to learn welding, fill local demand
Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"We're going to want to start welding in a circular motion." After hearing that advice from their instructor, Mark Pier, six members of a welding class in Vermillion, S.D., got fired up — literally — and made sparks fly. The class, formally titled "Welding in Industry," is designed to help fill a growing employee demand in the Vermillion area. Steps had already been taken earlier this year to make the 35-hour adult course a reality, thanks to a joining of forces of the Vermillion School District, the Vermillion Chamber of Commerce and Development Company, and Masaba Mining Equipment of Vermillion. Welding sparked artist's imagination
Tallahassee Democrat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sculptor Mark Dickson credits a great deal of his artistic inspiration to his paternal grandmother. "She was very involved in the Oakland Museum as a volunteer and docent, in California, where I grew up," he explains. "She also had a collection of abstract modern art, which I was exposed to from a really young age. She was sharp and smart. She'd tell us about the abstract artwork, and ask us what we saw and how we felt about it." But Dickson never considered art as a career for himself. He believed that in order to be an artist, you had to be able to paint and draw, neither of which were his strengths. He didn't discover welding and steel sculpture until he was almost 30. More

Demand high in Grand Island, Neb., for newer career path
The Grand Island Independent    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
To hear Tonja Broadwell tell it, the Career Pathways Institute probably can't start too soon. Welders and machinists are in critically short supply in Grand Island, Neb. However, CPI classes will not be offered at the Grand Island Public Schools' Adams Street property until the 2013-2014 school year. In the meantime, GIPS and Central Community College officials continue to improve their existing career and technical education programs, including the Health Science Academy at Senior High and the Industrial Academy at Central Community College-Grand Island, which does teach students how to weld. Manufacturers regain swagger with rosy earnings
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Despite a recession in Europe and slower growth in China, some big U.S. industrial companies are reporting surprisingly robust results for the first quarter and sounding confident about the rest of the year, largely because they are doing well at home. "We're off to a good start this year," 3M Co.'s new chief executive, Inge Thulin, said after the company reported a 4 percent rise in first-quarter net income, beating analysts' expectations for profit and margins. Manufacturing's rising tide fires up welding careers
Greeley Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bright orange sparks gushed from the steel bar as Jim Frey held it against the rapidly moving belt, smoothing it to get it ready for welding. With his brown Chevy hat on backward and a white apron covering his dark blue T-shirt and jeans, Frey gripped the bar in thick black gloves, and held it against the belt deburring machine for a few seconds, before setting it in a pile to his right, and reaching to his left for a new one. "There’s still quite a bit of hands-on work. You've got to have some mechanical experience to work here," said the 33-year-old who has worked at Harsh International Inc. for seven years. "Each week, it’s something different." Before he went to Harsh, the Loveland, Colo., native worked at a cemetery. More

Manufacturing contributed less to US growth last year
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturing added less to U.S. economic growth last year than in 2010, indicating a pickup in the expansion depends more on bigger gains in the services industry. Factory production accounted for 0.5 percentage point of the 1.7 percent increase in gross domestic product in 2011, the Commerce Department said. A year earlier, manufacturing added 1.2 percentage points to economic growth of 3 percent. More
