Manufacturing companies said to be 'begging' for welders
Omaha World-Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The seriousness of the situation was clear as soon as Jack Boysen started talking. Boysen, a Valmont Industries supervisor in Valley, Neb., was explaining how the plant's 220 welders are being pushed to their professional and physical limits. Seven days of work nearly every week and heaps of overtime force the company to rotate three shifts so that every other Sunday workers can have some time to spend with their families. And a steady stream of demand from Valmont's global customer base isn't going to ease those pressures anytime soon, he said. More

Fiber laser process targets medical plastics welding
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A powerful laser technology originally developed for the telecommunications industry now is targeting plastic welding and has significant implications for medical markets because it eliminates use of dyes and other additive extractables. It also may expedite the welding of polyolefin elastomers that are bidding to replace polyvinyl chloride for intravenous tubing and bags. The technology, developed in Russia in the 1990s by academic researchers, was introduced at NPE2012 and discussed in a presentation at Antec by IPG Photonics of Oxford, Mass., which had never exhibited at NPE before but now views nonmetallic welding as one of its biggest growth areas. Canon moves toward robots-only production for digital cameras
The Associated Press via Toronto Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Canon Inc. is moving toward fully automating digital camera production in an effort to cut costs — a key change being played out across Japan, a world leader in robotics. If successful, counting on machines can help preserve this nation's technological power — not the stereotype of machines snatching assembly line jobs from workers, said Jun Misumi, company spokesman. The move toward machine-only production likely will be completed in the next few years, perhaps as soon as 2015, said Misumi, although he declined to give specific dates. More

A jeweler with cutting-edge technology
KBIA-FM    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Personal technology is getting cheaper, better, smaller. But have you ever tried to repair a broken cell phone or mp3 player? Scott Pham writes that when he broke his portable USB flash drive, he took it to a computer repair technician, unsure if he'd be turned away or not. Those little "thumb" drives are just so small. No moving parts really, they're all circuitry. Turns out that getting it fixed wasn't an impossibility. Pham just had to go to some unusual places. More

Working to close the skills gap
The Detroit News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Archana Mani of Farmington Hills wants to get back in the work force. But after staying home with her children the past 10 years, the 40-year-old realized she faced an uphill battle. She has her master's degree in information systems from Eastern Michigan University, but she knew her skills required some freshening. So she enrolled in the Shifting Code program at the Wayne County Community College District in Detroit, which she says has made her more confident. The new program works with area employers to match demand with skilled workers. "It takes away the guesswork," Mani says. She is still looking for a job but has become more hopeful she'll find one. Work Ethic Camp welding class helps woman get back on track
McCook Daily Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It took a welding class offered at the McCook Work Ethic Camp for a 22-year-old to start her life over. "Never in a million years did I think I would be where I'm at today," said Megan Kirkpatrick, who is originally of North Platte, Neb., and now lives in McCook, where she works at Valmont Industries. Kirkpatrick took a wrong turn earlier in life and ended up serving time in the state prison in York, Neb., for drug-related charges. With the end of her sentence drawing near, she was offered the opportunity to finish it out at the Nebraska Department of Corrections Work Ethic Camp in McCook. More

Spark in sales of cars, trucks drives US economy
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Car sales that are running at the fastest pace in four years are poised to reverberate through the world's largest economy as a spillover into production, profits and jobs for Americans may be starting. Auto purchases have exceeded a 14 million annual rate in each month this year, the strongest performance since early 2008, according to Ward's Automotive Group. Government data show motor-vehicle output contributed half of the first quarter’s 2.2 percent economic growth. General Motors Co., the world's largest automaker last year, boosted its 2012 industry-sales forecast, Ford Motor Co. will add factory shifts and Chrysler Group LLC is stepping up hiring as demand rises. The resurgence — from assembly lines and dealerships to steelmakers, freight lines and loan providers — signals the U.S. is headed for lasting, robust growth, says Joseph Carson, director of global economic research at AllianceBernstein LP in New York. Oregon pushes college credits in high school
The World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
By 2025, Gov. John Kitzhaber wants all students in Oregon to graduate from high school with at least nine earned college credits. It's one of many changes proposed in the governor's new Education Achievement Compact that he hopes will replace No Child Left Behind for Oregon schools, and though it is far off, local high schools are gearing up. In Coos County, many school districts are already close to accomplishing the proposed standard, said Nathan Helland, the coordinator for high school relations at Southwestern Oregon Community College. SWOCC has worked with local school districts to get high school students into college-level classes for more than a decade with an "Expanded Options" program that includes colleges and vocational schools, he said. Manufacturing still growing in North Carolina 'Triad' region
News & Record via Chicago Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cancel the obituary. Forget the funeral dirge. Send the undertaker home. The death of manufacturing in the Triad has been greatly exaggerated. Granted, many felt tempted to bury the sector years ago. After all, over the past three decades, Guilford County lost 40 percent of its manufacturing jobs. And in an industry like furniture, for example, the losses in the Greensboro-High Point metro area between 1980 and 2010 totaled nearly 50 percent. In textile mills, they reached nearly 80 percent.
